2 The key questions about talent are… How can it be identified? How can it be cultivated effectively? How can be harvested when you need it? How can talent provide the basis for competitive advantage in the organization?

3 What are the Skills and Capabilities that are needed in Global Competition? Initiative and innovation (“self starter”) Problem Solving – unstructured problems Critical thinking – a willingness to challenge, to look at situations differently (strategize) Teamwork, regardless of the context Knowledge and skills are important, but intelligent application of these is critical -- fitting knowledge and skills to the context

8 Implications Keep the Human in Human Resources – Don’t homogenize out differences – Help students develop focus and competitive advantage in their talent Teach not just knowledge, but application – Critical thinking, entrepreneurial mindset, a willingness to experiment, a global orientation Talent is a basis of Core Competence – The key is to connect individual talent to team performance, thereby enhancing capabilities and resources that create and sustain competitive advantage in products and services
