ANNOUNCEMENTS 1.See me for help. 2.Grade Breakdown: 20% classwork 3.45% exams 4.35% LABS 5.We are on a running grade total!!! Your grade from the first quarter does NOT matter now. It is what you currently have.

TODAY’S OBJECTIVE Today you’ll be introduced to concept of Bonding and create the Lewis Structure. HS-PS1-3: Investigate the electrical strength between particles.

Combined Elements

Some matter is in the form of pure elements. Other types of matter is in the form of compounds. Elements unit to form compounds. Statue of liberty is made up of copper sulfate. Compounds formed have properties nothing like elements that formed them. (NaCl is an example.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So_t2cQRB8A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mzDwgyk6QM When written as NaCl, the symbols make up a formula. This tells us exactly what a compound contains and the number of atoms in that unit of compound. H20: Two hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

Atomic Stability An atom is chemically stable when it’s outer energy level is complete. H and He both require only two electrons to be stable. All the others require eight. To become stable, atoms must share, lose, or gain electrons. They do this by combining with other atoms. These atoms attract to form compounds called chemical bonds. This bond is the force that holds atoms together. This chemical bond is the force that holds atoms together in a compound. (demo)
