The movement of a body, or link, is studied using geometry so the link is considered to be rigid. The connections between links are modeled as providing ideal movement, pure rotation or sliding for example, and are called joints.

A controlled arm and a radial lever are so coupled along a center line to the supporting structure and each other that a controlled arm end is restricted to substantially linear motion only for a predetermined segment of its path.
