2 What is ‘Employability’ Encompasses all the things that enable people to increase their chances of getting a job, staying in, and progressing further in work Not the same as getting someone a job Can include health and social care interventions, as these can improve a person’s employability

3 Health & Employability Strong evidence shows that being out of work is bad for both mind and body Returning to work from unemployment improves health by as much as unemployment damages it Healthcare Professionals are increasingly being asked to play a proactive role in this joined up agenda

4 Employability Pathway Describes the journey people take on their way towards work Includes those who are at a very early point in considering work and who may need significant support to begin their journey Also those who have a clear career goal in mind and are ready to take up paid employment

5 Stage 1 : Positive Activity Range of services that support people into regular activity, positive routines, and to connect with others. Includes: Leisure Activities Physical activity Getting involved in community based activities Social inclusion activities

6 Stage 2 : Work Prep Initial Range of services that support people to become more aware, build confidence, and develop their life and coping skills. Includes: Literacy and Numeracy, Communication Life Skills Development Stress Management Confidence building and motivational programmes

7 Stage 3 : Work Prep Later Range of services that focus more on specific career advice and guidance. Includes: Supporting Volunteering Vocational training Job Search Skills Job Tasters Work Experience

8 Stage 4 : In Work Early Describes Aftercare services that typically last for up to 13 weeks. Includes: Active support for employee Assist employee to retain and progress in job Active support for employer Supported Employment Helping employee adjust to specific barriers

9 Stage 5 : In Work Later Range of services that support people to sustain employment and services for those with specific barriers or in-work support needs. Includes: Career development to progress in work Assist employee to retain job Support for employer Helping employee adjust to specific barriers

10 Role of Health Professionals Recognise the benefits of improving employability: better wellbeing, reduced use of medication, improved social interactions Encourage patients to take positive steps Refer to appropriate services

11 Keep well Employability Questions 1. Are you currently unemployed? If not does your health prevent you from working? Even those furthest away from the labour market can benefit from taking part in meaningful activity

12 Keep well Employability Questions 2. If employed, does your health cause you problems at work In-work support sevices can help to ensure that work is maintained in a way which meets the patient’s needs

13 Keep well Employability Questions 3. Would you like to see an adviser who can support you with training, education or employment Employability advisers can access a range of services to help the patient begin their pathway journey

14 Benefits of Employability Services Address barriers such as fear, health concerns, low self-esteem, low expectations Encourage patients to achieve their aspirations Access information on availability of services Interact with service providers and employers on the patient’s behalf
