3 Structure of the Course This is largely a “Paper Review” course with a “Final Term Paper”. Paper review will be done individually. Each student will present a lecture talk on the reviewed paper(s). Final term paper will be done individually by each student on a possible new direction on some topic or a detailed survey paper on some topic.

4 Paper Review See class website for the current working list of papers. Each student selects a topic, which corresponds typically to one paper, but possibly the topic spans two papers, the second one being a follow-up paper. Each student presents a lecture to a class. Talk should be about 30 minutes.

5 Paper Review (cont’d) You are allowed to use slides from the Internet, but you must clearly indicate this in your first slide (“the slides of these presentations were taken from...”). You can add your own slides too.

6 Paper Review (cont’d) Very important that every lecture starts with (a) background; (b) related work. “Background” means that you cover topics that are necessary for understanding your lecture and most students are not likely to know. “Related Work” is usually a section in the paper. (This can be brief.) A typical talk structure will be: 1) Introduction, 2) Background, 3) Related Work, 4)... 5)...6)... 7) Summary.

7 Paper Review (cont’d) If you present “early” or present a paper to which there are no slides available on the Internet, then you will be given extra “slack” to compensate.

8 Final Term Paper The final term paper can be either of the following: – New idea: Expand on a possible research direction related to one of the course lectures (not necessarily the one that you gave). Describe the open problem being considered, and describe clearly the high-level idea and a plausible research direction to pursue and validate the idea. – Survey paper: Select 4 or more papers in an area and write a detailed survey paper about them. Due finals week. Report should be written in LaTeX (preferrably LaTeX) or Word.

9 Course Grade 60% for the lecture (paper review) 30% for the final term paper 10% active participation in the course In order to get a grade, you must attend all the meetings.
