2 St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Who founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital? Danny Thomas founded the St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Before opening the hospital, he was known as an entertainer and a comedian. When was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Founded? He opened the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on February 4, 1962. The hospital opened in Memphis, Tennessee, before a crowd of 9,000 people.

According to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital website, “The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.” Despite the devastating death rate of children with cancer, sickle cell disease and other catastrophic disorders, there was no hospital or institution dedicated to fighting these diseases. St. Jude took on the battle of fighting against these childhood diseases.

The tumor, called osteosarcoma, had caused his shoulder to swell and had made tasks such as buckling a seat belt difficult. Upon discovering the tumor, Joel's doctor immediately sent him to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Joel underwent chemotherapy and an amputation to keep the cancer from spreading. Now Joel works for the hospital that saved his life, helping share the stories of children like him who are valiantly fighting against cancer.
