2 What IS Youth Exchange? Rotary International takes custody High School students from all over the world Building Bridges of good will between different cultures – one hug at a time

5 How’s An Exchange Set Up? District Chairs make arrangements with each country – must be with another Certified district Exchanges are usually 1 for 1 Exchanges must meet each R.I. certification requirements. –Host family screening –Student recruiting –Language requirements –Education about host country

7 Youth Exchange Challenges Students' health and safety Immersing Inbounds in the new culture Host Families Background Checks State Department Education Dynamic political environment in which we live

8 Host Family Screening Ideally Three per Exchange Background Checks Interview with all family members Home Inspection Student must have there own bed; can share a room with someone of similar age and gender

9 How Can I Help? Host a Student Donate to the district youth exchange fund Recommend possible hosts Time with the Students –Club Activities –Cultural/Athletic Events –Family Meals Time with Outbounds –Knowledge of Country/Language? –Help prepare them

10 2011-2012 Exchange Countries: France – Germany - Belgium Switzerland - Taiwan – Thailand Italy – Spain - India This year we have 8 inbound students and 9 outbound students 7 Long-term and 2 short-term 2011-12 we will have one New Generations exchange to India.

12 Last year’s Inbound Students Danae Coquelet, Belgium hosted by McAllen Natacha Prats, France hosted by Mission Katarzya Schwartz, Germany to Harlingen Yi-Lum Lin, Taiwan, hosted by Laredo Maressa Ribeiro, Brazil, hosted by Laredo Gateway Celine Franz, Belgium, hosted by Harlingen, (STEP) Maximum of six students permitted this year
