University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Department of Mechanical Engineering Introduction to NX 6.0 Software Overview Modified by (2011): Dr. Vijay K. Goyal and Dr. Ricky Valentin Associate Professors Michael Jr. Cruz, Undergraduate Student Juan Reines, Graduate Student Department of Mechanical Engineering University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez

Unigraphics NX (UGS NX) UGS NX is a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software system developed by Siemens PLM used among others for: – Design: CAD parametic/non parametric design, and Industrial Design – Analysis: Static, Dynamic, Thermal, using the Finite Element Analysis method – Manufacturing: CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) and automation.

Benefits of PLM Documented benefits of product lifecycle management include: 1. Reduced time to market 2. Improved product quality 3. Reduced prototyping costs 4. More accurate and timely Request For Quote generation 5. Ability to quickly identify potential sales opportunities and revenue contributions 6. Savings through the re-use of original data 7. A framework for product optimization 8. Reduced waste 9. Savings through the complete integration of engineering workflows 10. Ability to provide Contract Manufacturers with access to a centralized product record

From your desktop: Click on: START > All Programs > UGS NX 6.0 > NX 6.0. Here we will set our Working Directory and the Graphics Manager Starting NX 6.0 Alternatively, double-click on NX 6.0 shortcut icon on the desktop of your computer.

The main NX 6.0 screen will open. This is the Gateway of NX 6.0. The NX 6.0 blank screen looks like the figure shown below. NX 6.0 Gateway

Click on: New File > Model Template Name: anyname_without_spacing.prt Folder: C:\create_folder_without_spacing New File Model Template Name Folder New File Starting NX 6.0

The following figure shows the typical layout of the NX 6.0 window when a new file is opened. Menu Bar Title Bar Datum Coordinate System Assembly Navigator Part Navigator Reuse Library Internet Explorer History System Materials Process Studio Resource Bar Roles System Visualization Scene Toolbar: Applications Progress meter Cue line NX 6.0 Gateway

NX Sheet Metal Shape Studio Motion Simulation Drafting Advanced Simulation Manufacturing

Title bar: The Title Bar displays the following information for the current part file: – The name of the current displayed part – The name of the current work part – If the work part is read only – If the work part has been modified since it was last saved Menu bar: The Menu Bar is the horizontal menu of options displayed at the top of the main window directly below the title bar. Menu bar options are called menu titles; clicking on a menu title leads to a drop-down menu of choices. Tool bar: A Toolbar is a row of icons that you can use to activate standard NX menu items. Resource Bar: The Resource Bar have all the navigator windows and is located on the left side of the NX 6.0 window. You can dock and undock the resource bar by clicking on the pin icon on the top left of the resource window. Functions of each Gateway Zone

Cue Line: The cue line is shown at the top of the main NX window below all the toolbars and displays prompt messages that indicate the next action that needs to be taken. Status Line: The status line, located to the right of the Cue area, displays information messages about the current options or the most recent completed function. Progress meter: The progress meter will appear when the system performs a time consuming operation. The meter shows the percentage of the operation that has been completed. NX 6.0 Gateway Quick Overview

Computer Aided Design (CAD) The Modeling application represents the primary tool for CAD. It is more suitable to the needs of engineering applications. Exploded views and assemblies can be created under this application.

By assigning mathematical functions to the components' measurements, quick adjustments can be made if needed be without need to create completely new components, note that the integrity of the component’s design doesn’t change at all from the resizing. In this case, changing only one diameter dimension makes all 31 components in the assembly to be automatically updated. Parameterization

Industrial Design Utilizing the Shape Studio and Sheet Metal Applications more complex shapes and surfaces can be created, due to the greater flexibility over the Modeling application. Renderings of models can be created under the Shape Studio application.

Drafting The Drafting application allows the creation of schematics. Sectional views and dimension tolerances can be added to the drawings from this application.

Analysis Under the Advanced Simulation and Motion Simulation applications, structural and multibody static and dynamic analysis of models can be created respectively, other types of analysis can also be made.

Manufacturing (CAM) The manufacturing application is used for surface machining, it allows for tool simulation as well as automation capabilities.
