Unit 4, Day 6 Genetics & Human Development W/R, Jan 30 th -31 st (Block, 100 min)

Homework Due Today None

Daily Question Page 39.D A heterozygous tall, red-flowered plant is crossed with a homozygous short, white- flowered plant. Determine the probability that the phenotype of the offspring will be Tall/Red, Tall/White, Short/Red, and Short/White.

Step 1 and Step 2 Step 1: How many traits are there? Will we do a monohybrid or a dihybrid Punnett square? Step 2: Which allele is dominant in each trait? (Recall that in a heterozygous genotype, you only see the dominant phenotype)

Step 3 and Step 4 Step 3: Assign letters to each trait. (ex. T for tall, t for short) Step 4: What is the four-letter genotype of the first plant? Of the second plant?

Step 5 and Step 6 Step 5: What are the gametes for the first plant? For the second plant? Place these on the outside of the square. Step 6: Do the cross. Check your answers. Remember that all offspring should have the same number of letters as the parents!

Step 7 Step 7: Find the probability of the phenotypes of the offspring. ▫Tall/Red: ▫Tall/White: ▫Short/Red: ▫Short/White:

Try #2! Two heterozygous Tall, Green pea plants are crossed. Find the probability that their offspring will be Tall/Green, Tall/White, Short/Green, Short/White. ▫Step 1: # of traits ▫Step 2: Which traits are dominant? ▫Step 3: Assign letters ▫Step 4: 4-Letter genotype of parents? ▫Step 5: Gametes of each plant? ▫Step 6: Do the cross. ▫Step 7: Find the probability for offspring.

Essential Skills and Knowledge Essential Skill #2.2 (Development): I can describe the growth stages of human development from a zygote formed at fertilization to an adult human being. ***Note: Essential Skill #2.1 (Genetics) was reviewed on Monday/Tuesday

Human Development Review Prenatal Development (Page 36.F) 1.What does the word “prenatal” mean? 2.What is the process by which one cell (zygote) becomes trillions of cells? 3.How many daughter cells does mitosis produce? 4.How many chromosomes do those daughter cells have? (n or 2n) 5.Besides growing up, what is another purpose of mitosis?
