6. Importance of the Louisiana Purchase It doubled the size of the U.S. It gave the U.S. control of the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans.

7. Was it constitutional? Jefferson worried that the Constitution did not give the president the power to buy territory. How did he justify the purchase? –T–T–T–The Constitution gives the President the power to make treaties with other nations. The Senate ratified the treaty in 1803.

8. Lewis and Clark Jefferson asked his personal secretary, Merriwether Lewis to explore the Louisiana Territory. Lewis asked a friend, William Clark, to be co-leader on the expedition they called the Corps of Discovery. The mission of the Corps of Discovery: to explore and report back to Jefferson on animals, resources, and to map a route to the Pacific Ocean.

9. Some Members of the Expedition Merriwether Lewis WilliamClark Sacagawea Clark also brought his slave, York. York was a full member of the Corps of Discovery but was returned to slavery afterwards. A Native American translator, she had a baby on the trip.
