Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 6 Those delivered from Egyptian bondage Christians delivered from SIN Delivered BUT FELL!! 1 Cor. 10:1-13 (NKJV) [1] Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, [2] all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, [3] all ate the same spiritual food, [4] and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. [5] But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 7 They fell – SO CAN WE!!!! What IF We Do ANY of These things??? Heb 4:11 1 Cor. 10:1-13 (NKJV) [6] Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. [7] And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." [8] Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; [9] nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; [10] nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 8 1 Cor. 10:6 (NKJV) [6] Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 1 Cor. 10:11 (NKJV) [11] Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 9 Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 9 1 Cor. 10:1-13 (NKJV) [11] Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. [12] Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. [13] No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. A WARNING TO US!!!!!

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 10  Israel is an EXAMPLE for us (were they REALLY delivered from bondage?) – [10:1-5,11]  “He thinks he stands” – i.e. he thinks he cannot fall - Mat. 26:31-35; 69-75  God always makes a way of escape – [10:13]  My beloved, FLEE idolatry – [10:14-22] [12] Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 13 People who teach that it is possible to lose your salvation normally use several prooftexts. At first glance the verses do appear to prove their point. However, upon further study it becomes clear that they have taken the verses out of context and forced a meaning upon the text which the author never intended. A case in point is Galatians 5:4. President Grace Evangelical Society:

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 14 The whole issue here is what falling from grace means. Does it mean that the believers in question have fallen from their positional standing in grace? If it does, then Paul contradicts himself because in other passages he clearly states that is impossible (cf. Romans 8:38-39; Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30; Colossians 2:13-14; 1 Thessalonians 5:10; 2 Timothy 2:13). President Grace Evangelical Society:

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 15 Falling from grace means that a believer who reverts to pharisaical thinking and practices has fallen from a present experience of grace. While our position in the grace of God is secure, our experience of His grace is not. If a believer today is unwittingly duped into joining a works-salvation cult, he will cease to experience God's grace until he leaves the cult. President Grace Evangelical Society:

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 16 If a believer joins any group, cult or otherwise, which teaches that we must produce good works in order to maintain our salvation, he will cease to experience grace. Even the linking of assurance to the quality of our lives can lead a believer to fall from a daily experience of grace. President Grace Evangelical Society:

Don McClainW. 65th St church of Christ / March 18, 2007 17 Galatians 5:1-8 (NKJV) Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. [2] Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. [3] And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. [4] You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. [5] For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. [6] For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. [7] You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? [8] This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.
