7 Assertions Practice Read the following thesis statement then write down the 3 assertions statements from the following list that best relate to the thesis statement. Thesis: In the poem “Sea- Fever,” John Masefield reveals his complex attitude toward sailing by using diction, imagery, and figurative language to convey the lonely but exciting life of a sailor. Possible Assertions: 1.The speaker personifies the sea as a powerful being that demands that the sailor return. 2.The poem is divided into three four-line stanzas. 3.The speaker’s description of the solitude of the sea makes the seaman’s life seem exhilarating. 4.Masefield’s use of alliteration reflects the speakers desire to return to the sea. 5.The speaker uses words with positive connotation to show his ambition for a life out at sea, but he also uses words with negative connotations to express the solitary life that parallels excitement.

Here’s an example of what your homework will look- Thesis Statement- In the novel, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley utilizes the character of the “monster” in order to portray how judgment on outward appearances can cause isolation and depression. Assertion #1 Victor felt a rush of guilt and shame when he first set eyes upon his creation. Assertion #2 When the monster went out into the world, he had no one to look out or care for him due to the fear they felt upon looking at him. Assertion #3 Due to his constant loneliness the monster was no longer able to control his emotions so he fell into a void of depression that consumed him. I will take up your homework page tomorrow, look over them, conference with you during SSR, and evaluate them over the weekend if necessary.
