2
Vocabulary - Definitions The words (or words and phrases) that make up a language All of the words known and used by a person A language user's knowledge of words
3
Aspects of lexical knowledge Receptive – Productive Degree of knowledge Never encountered the word. Heard the word, but cannot define it. Recognize the word due to context or tone of voice. Able to use the word and understand the general and/or intended meaning, but cannot clearly explain it. Fluent with the word – its use and definition. Depth of knowledge
4
What should learners know about lexical items? Form – spoken, written Meaning – L1 equivalent Use Form – grammatical variants Collocations Associations (synonyms, antonyms, sets)
5
The role of vocabulary in language learning How important is vocabulary in language learning? What do you think? How many words do you need to know in order to read a text? (minimal comprehension – optimal comprehension %?)
6
Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed 98% of words need to be known for independent reading. 95% minimally acceptable comprehension (Laufer 2010).
7
Lexical threshold (adult L2 learners) Optimal threshold 8,000 word families yielding the coverage of 98% of words in a text (including proper nouns) Minimal threshold 4,000–5,000 word families resulting in the coverage of 95% of words in a text (including proper nouns) Source: Laufer and Geke C. Ravenhorst-Kalovski (2010) http://www.lextutor.ca/

11
The Initiative Focus on vocabulary expansion and retention School wide, multi aged activity Video as a powerful incentive and medium Process – last year and this year Word research Digital resources Blog

13
The Process – 2 Producing the video Students come up with a storyline for chosen word Teacher and students write the script Students learn their lines Clip is filmed, edited and uploaded to school site Edpuzzle adds an interactive dimension to the video clips Edpuzzle
14
Digital Tools The following digital tools which were used in the project have free basic accounts. This also includes a teacher account in which you can create and manage your own classrooms. Edpuzzle Thinglink Education Storybird
