Innovations in Technology: Addressing the progressive needs of Faculty, Students, and Staff Ocean College Indiana University Carolynn Nath, Allison Jedinak, Debbie Deas, Melissa Borsz

The Changing Campus Culture When asked about the impact of the Internet on their college experience, 79 percent said that Internet has had a positive influence: 60 percent believe the Internet has improved their relationships with classmates; 56 percent believe it has improved their relationships with professors. Todays student are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach. – Marc Prensky Its very serious, because the single biggest problem facing education today is that our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language. I would like to see professors try to integrate more technology into their courses…Then I had another professor who, not fearful of technology, integrated it into everything we were doing. He assailed my senses. He had clips from the Web. He did Google searches. He used PowerPoint. He showed video. – Jessica (millennial generation) http://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i18/18b01001.htmhttp://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i18/18b01001.htm ; Aviles, K., Phillips, B., Rosenblatt, T., & Vargas, J. (2005); Prensky, M. (2001); and Oblinger, D. (2003)

Meeting Agenda Guest Speakers 5 technological innovations affecting Ocean College (OC) (Blogs, Spam, Music Downloading, YouTube, Marketing OC) How do these impact the faculty, students, and staff Pros Cons Gathering more information Questions

Knowledge Base: Guest Speakers Edward Banning, Office of Campus Admissions Marcus Drake, College of Informatics Hope Anderson, Office of Judicial and Legal Affairs Amber Dillon, Information Technology Services Stephano Gonzalez, Campus Police Daniel Corbin, Department of Residence Life

Ocean University: 5 Hot Topics Technology Innovation on the College Campus We believe these are the top concerns universities and colleges are facing in the United States, its imperative we educate ourselves in order to understand our students and technological trends… 1. Spam and Email 2. Blogs and Blogging 3. Music Downloading 4. YouTube 5. Marketing Ocean College

Spam and Email What is a Spam? What are the affects of Spam? Why can I not get some of my email? What is a filter? Protect or to not protect… University implications

What is a Spam? The Start of Spam: The term spam is derived from the Monty Python SPAM sketch, set in a cafe where nearly every item on the menu includes SPAM luncheon meat. As the server recites the SPAM-filled menu, a chorus of Viking patrons drowns out all conversations with a song repeating "SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM... lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM," hence Spamming" the dialogue. The excessive amount of SPAM mentioned in the sketch is a reference to British rationing during World War II. SPAM was one of the few foods that was widely available. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_%28electronic%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_%28electronic%29 Todays Spam : Is defined as the Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/spam http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/spam What are the affects of Spam? Spam's direct effects include, but are not limited to, the consumption of computer and network resources, the increasing cost in human time and energy, and ever growing attention of dismissing unwanted messages. Spam and Email

Why can I not get some email? If you are using campus email (Microsoft Outlook) then you have a spam folder which is located on your Mail toolbar (on the right hand side) labeled Junk E-Mail. What is a filter? Protect or to not protect… A filter helps reduce the amount of spam mail in your inbox. However, the filter will also move e- mails that are not screened as a normal or frequently viewed. This means you may have to check your Junk E-Mail in order to remove list-serve emails from being sent to spam. As well as personal emails that you have not initiated. Junk E-mail is the same as a SPAM folder or Filter

Spam and Email University implications: Faculty use and non-use of electronic mail: Attitudes, expectations, and profiles Faculty who perceive that technology plays a positive functional role in improving the instructional process are also the ones who feel that e-mail can function as an effective and appropriate communication tool for interacting with students. The results from this study illustrate that the availability of technology does not necessarily suggest its use. The potential user must see a clear advantage to the use of technology to use it. Mitra, A., Hazen, M.D., LaFrance, B., Rogan, R.G. (1999)

Spam and Email Final Thoughts… Legislation has been working hard to put in laws in affect to battle this issue. Email attachment sizes are increasing and maxing out in-boxes Costs are rising to increase the technology that block spam and other junk email Its important to clean our you spam and junk boxes on a regular basis and to remove emails that work mistakenly scanned there Do not use your campus email address for free items on the internet, purchases (other than for work), or raffles! This is the number one cause of filling your campus spam and junk email boxes

Bogs and Blogging What is a Blog? Who can blog? How does one blog? Do bloggers have options? Protect or to not protect… University implications

Bogs and Blogging What is a Blog? Definition: an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page; also called [Weblog], [Web log] http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/blog http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/blog Who can Blog? Anyone that has access to a computer can blog. Some websites have free blogging options and others can have paid subscriptions. Blogger.comhas a tutorial to guide you through the process. http://www2.blogger.com/tour_start.g Other websites such as Facebook.com and Myspace, which our students and staff use, have blogging options. http://www2.blogger.com/tour_start.g Many political figures, celebrities, faculty, and students are using blogs Students and staff working or studying abroad have reported back about their experiences Examples University of Chicago Faculty Blog http://uchicagolaw.typepad.com/faculty/2006/11/harcourt_agains.html Georgetown Faculty Blog http://gulcfac.typepad.com/georgetown_university_law/ Harvard Faculty Blog http://blog.hbs.edu/faculty/amcafee/http://blog.hbs.edu/faculty/amcafee/ Virginia Commonwealth University http://blog.vcu.edu/abroad/http://blog.vcu.edu/abroad/ University of Redlands http://www.redlands.edu/x140.xmlhttp://www.redlands.edu/x140.xml http://www.bespacific.com/mt/archives/cat_blogs.html http://static.unto.net/blogging_in_flock.jpg

Blogs and Blogging Do bloggers have options? Protect or to not protect… Bloggers do have the option to keep their log of thoughts published both privately or publicly. Privacy preferences can be established so that the author can be notified and accept a reader of his/her blog. Some authors evoke their right to free speech and not establish privacy settings. However, there is a large population that is not educated about privacy settings for their blogs, so they do not activate them. This makes authors google-able. Which means if one goes to google.com they can google a name and the authors blog would appear. Know your limits! Be cautious about your free speech! Faculty have lost tenure at their institutions because they violated their contract! http://www.bespacific.com/mt/archives/cat_blogs.html http://www.bespacific.com/mt/archives/cat_blogs.html On the Job Search? Employers have scanned bloggers postings before hiring! http://chronicle.com/weekly/v51/i44/44c00301.htm and http://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i04/04a03501.htm http://chronicle.com/weekly/v51/i44/44c00301.htmhttp://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i04/04a03501.htm Legal issues can arise on your campus http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2006/12/28/johnson http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2006/12/28/johnson Discussions of Student Trends in the Classroom can be viewed publicly! http://chronicle.com/weekly/v52/i21/21a03702.htm http://chronicle.com/weekly/v52/i21/21a03702.htm

Benefits of Blogging Fostering relationships with students and staff Creative expression and reflection For my students, the blogs offered a clear advantage over discussion forums because the blogs had greater sense of permanence. A wonderful thing happened – students weekly writings became longer and much more thoughtful. Students began commenting on each others blogs…and additional pieces of writing…began appearing on their blogs. Martindale & Wiley (2005) Blogs and Blogging

University implications: OC currently does not have any rules or polices outlined for campus about blogging. Faculty and staff may have departmental policies about speech and internet use, it is highly suggested that those are conversations within the work place We are currently work with IT and Campus Legal Services at OC to create these policies and guidelines Campus housing does have technology policies but these are limited to those designated areas Blogs and Blogging

Final Thoughts… The 1 st Amendment and Academic Freedom protects faculty, students, and staff. BUT it is IMPERATIVE that you know your campus and department policies so you are not violating your terms of employment. It is a way in which you can utilize technology in the classroom and for various assignments. With that, it is important to educate your students on the use and public view of blogs.

Music Downloads What is a Music Download? Who can Download? Downloading Music at Ocean College? Protected or not protected… University implications

Music Downloads What is a Music Download? A music download is a song or album available for downloading on the Internet. Downloading music first became popular with file sharing technologies such as peer-to-peer networks, with people breaking copyright laws by not paying for any of it. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) claimed that this practice was hurting the music industry, and a series of law suits led to many of these networks being closed down. Those who support such technologies argue that the music industry said the same thing about recordable tapes and CDs, and even when recorded music came out as before then artists got their money through live performance, and that the industry should adapt to the advancements in technology rather than panicking and suing select individuals. Very little publishable academic research has been done to clarify this form of massive consumer behavior. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_download http://www.mp3easy.co.uk/gifs/screens/settings.jpg

Music Downloads Download Providers: Napster Lime-Wire iTunes Rhapsody Morpheus URGE Ruckus KaZaa Grokster http://chronicle.com/free/v48/i05/05a04401.htm

Music Downloads Why does file size matter? The University of Tennessee at Knoxville has seen tremendous network- usage increases this year as well. Last spring, the university installed a new Internet pipe just for the dormitories; it ran at 85% of capacity until the end of the school year. "They came back this year and pretty much pegged it at 100 % right off the bat," says Dewitt Latimer, the director of information-technology infrastructure for the university system. http://chronicle.com/free/v48/i05/05a04401.htm http://chronicle.com/free/v48/i05/05a04401.htm These increases also cost the university more and more every year. The more people download the more man power is needed to develop assessment tools to scan for piracy. http://chronicle.com/free/v48/i05/05a04401.htm

Music Downloads Downloading Music at Ocean College? Protected OC currently has implemented policies and guidelines in place to protect its campus downloader's OC has options so you can download free anti-virus and filter software to protect your computer Not Protected… Public and work spaces at OC are not automatically set to protect your computer If you sign on the OC network, anywhere, and download illegally you could be held responsible! A Name you should know! Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Protects record companies Has been the forces which has removed all major-label songs from the file- swapping services while larger cases come to trial They are going after everyone! Legal Case: MGM Studios v. Grokster Directly relevant for colleges and universities Students have been major consumers of the movies and music that the entertainment studios have accused the file sharing companies, like Grokster, of permitting to be downloaded illegally They are now going after college and university communities for not acknowledging the issue http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2005/06/28/supreme

Music Downloads University implications: 1. Copying and sharing copyright-protected material could bear legal penalties. 2. The saturation of network resources makes it difficult to conduct essential business. 3. Utilizing host file servers to store illegally reproduced copyright-protected files makes the host (in this case OC) an accomplice to an illegal activity. 4. Security is compromised when file-sharing settings are enabled. 5. Misuse of university resources and enabling peer-to-peer (P2P) utilities on computers owned by OC (without justification or approval) could lead to disciplinary or legal action against the employee. The Q&A content of this web page will attempt to address each of these issues. If you have questions after reading this information, please contact the ITS Customer Support Center at 555-575-7700. To disable file sharing on your computer, please follow the instructions on our website: www.its.oc1.edu (select the link entitled disable file sharing located under critical updates). Sample Q& As Q. If someone at home uses my personal computer, and an NIU dial-up service, to download copyright-protected items, could I be held responsible? A. Yes. Q. Will disabling file sharing improve my computers performance? A. Yes! Q. If I download music from the Internet, am I doing something illegal? A. Possibly. Q. If I download files from the Internet, am I impacting OCs network? A. All activity impacts the network. File sharing has the potential to harm the network. All answers follow with a summarization to explain the implications or reasons Policies Adopted from Northern Illinois University http://www.its.niu.edu/its/PublicRelations/P2P/faculty-staff.shtmlhttp://www.its.niu.edu/its/PublicRelations/P2P/faculty-staff.shtml

Final Thoughts… File sizes are increasing Costs are rising to increase bandwidth Downloading occurs to frequently in our work spaces Protect yourself! Follow the rules on and off campus! Music Downloads

http://www.youtube.com/ YouTube What is YouTube? Who can view and use YouTube? YouTube at Ocean College? Classrooms, Residence Halls, and more… University implications http://www.youtube.com/t/abouthttp://www.youtube.com/t/about; http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,70627-0.htmlhttp://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,70627-0.html

YouTube http://www.youtube.com/t/about What is YouTube? YouTube is a free service that allows users to upload, view, comment on, and share videos Currently, there are millions of videos available for viewing In April 2006, 350,000 videos were being posted daily to www.YouTube.com www.YouTube.com Over 70 million people access videos from the site daily Who can use YouTube? Anyone with access to the World Wide Web can use YouTube to view and share videos Users must set up accounts to post videos, but user accounts are not necessary for viewing

YouTube YouTube at Ocean College? YouTube can be used in a variety of ways to serve the needs of multiple campus populations Alumni Relations Gallaudet University Alumni Association Gallaudet University Alumni Association Azusa Pacific University Residence Halls Virtual Tours Marquette University Judicial Case Evidence Chads Drunk (explicit language) Chads Drunk The Room Classrooms Presenting research findings to larger populations Presenting research findings to larger populations Video Instruction & Integrated Learning Video Instruction & Integrated Learning Recruitment Virtual Tours & Promotional Videos Princeton University University of Derby Admissions Dickinson College Lubbock Christian University

YouTube University Implications of YouTube Benefits of YouTube Increased publicity with less cost than traditional means (printed publications, DVDs, etc.) Integrated and applied learning for students Investigation for judicial cases Limitations/precautions Class lectures have been posted without permission of the professors, which has lead to disciplinary action in some cases (including loss of tenure and termination) (http://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i09/09a00602.htm)http://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i09/09a00602.htm Having a broader audience for may make pranks more attractive (Village People Lecture Hall Prank, Prangstgrup – Reach! A Lecture Hall Musical Prank)Village People Lecture Hall PrankPrangstgrup – Reach! A Lecture Hall Musical Prank

YouTube Final Thoughts: Incoming college students are using this technology and will continue to do so as they look at and attend colleges and universities. In 2005, …57% of online teens create[d] content for the internet. That amounts to half of all teens ages 12-17, or about 12 million youth. (http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Teens_Content_Creation.pdf)http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Teens_Content_Creation.pdf Students, faculty, and staff must know their rights regarding video files on the internet YouTube policies Some argue that video recording a class violates the professors intellectual property rights. Other refute this idea but caution those who are posting videos to be aware of laws in their local jurisdiction regarding secret video tapes. (You May Have Been YouTubed)You May Have Been YouTubed

Marketing Ocean College Who is our market? What do statistics say? How do we market currently and how do we compare? University implications Strategic plan

Marketing Ocean College Oblinger, D.G. (2003) Who is our market? What do statistics say? In a study of how those age twelve to seventeen used the Web, researchers found that 94 percent use the Internet for school research and that 78 percent believe the Internet helps them with schoolwork. Among teens, instant messaging and e-mail seem to be natural communication and socialization mechanisms: 70 percent use instant messaging to keep in touch; 41 percent use e-mail and instant messaging to contact teachers or schoolmates about class work. Our incoming students are engrained into the internet culture Transfer and continuing education students are at this point too, or eager to learn They may not have time to visit prospective campuses They seek online information for these purposes

How do we market currently and how do we compare? Current: Paper Brochures and publications On-Campus visit days Online Campus photographs drafted building plans and floor plans Compare: Other institutions have online web cams of construction projects and various campus hot spots Virtual tours of campus and residence halls Online campus chats with admissions counselors Examples: Residence Halls Coastal Carolina University – Virtual tours of residence halls http://tours.360vt.com/465/viewer.asp?id=The_Rivers&market=Myrtle+Beach Campus Map and Online Virtual Tours New York University – Virtual Campus Map http://www.nyu.edu/about/virtual.htmlhttp://www.nyu.edu/about/virtual.html University of North Carolina – Charlotte http://www.admissions.uncc.edu/jump/CampusMap/CampusMap.asphttp://www.admissions.uncc.edu/jump/CampusMap/CampusMap.asp Web cameras University of North Carolina Charlotte – Construction Webcams http://facilities.uncc.edu/webcam/http://facilities.uncc.edu/webcam/ Admission Chats Southern Methodist University http://www.smu.edu/admission/virtualsmu.asphttp://www.smu.edu/admission/virtualsmu.asp Marketing Ocean College

University implications Strategic plan Create virtual tour of campus and residence halls Partner with eCampusTours.comeCampusTours.com Upload videos of current students experiences in various degree programs Online tutorials for course registration, parking and transportation including maps and schedules Start initiatives to make portions of transfer student orientation online Increasing marketing of online and distance courses Marketing Ocean College
