Its membership comprises eight companies with clinker and cement manufacturing facilities, granulating and grinding facilities, and distribution terminals from Atlantic Canada to the Pacific coast. 3. 3 Canadas Membership in APP Canadas cement industry is fully supportive of the Government of Canadas membership in the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate. APP is a good vehicle for government and industry to work together towards developing technology and common solutions on climate change and clean development that can be shared among the seven countries Cement industry is pleased that Canada has been chosen as the co-chair to the Cement Task Force

Domestic Working Group The Canadian CTF Domestic Working Group was established following Canada joining the APP –Informal –Collaborative The Working Group has been meeting regularly since this time, primarily in advance of CTF meetings to prepare for the official meetings CAC is working closely with the government officials to help them better understand their understanding of the cement industry, as well as the many potential opportunities the cement sector can provide to governments to assist in further good cooperation between the government and industry: –Plant tours –Industry updates and briefings –Two way communication 5

Canadian Progress in Catching Up The Canadian cement industry is accelerating its efforts to deliver value added to the current portfolio of CTF projects underway: –Project 1 (Status Report) – complete and submitted –Project 2 (Benchmarking) – being finalized, to be submitted in advance of CTF- 7 –Project 3 (Legislative & Regulatory Analysis) – Tabled analysis conducted by CAC on border adjustments The Canadian cement industry has put forward two project proposals for consideration of government funding that both fall under the current CTF projects and proposes a new umbrella project: –LCA Concrete Highways, working closely with the PCA and building on their literature review so that the CAC can have a predictive model designed (Project 4- Life Cycle Evaluation of Concrete Building Construction as a Strategy for Sustainable Cities) –Supplementary Cementing Materials Optimization System – software tool for use by governments, architects, specifiers and others in the construction industry to assist them with a tool that will help them better understand the amount of SCMs that could be incorporated into a project 6

Canadian Recommendations Allowing more time for break out sessions so that strategic discussions can take place among taskforce members, in addition to project updates Establishing a process to create linkages between APP task forces –Ex. Cement Task Force – Buildings and Appliances Task Force –Ex. Cement Task Force – (Proposed) Road and Transport Task Force Encouraging linkages with other international organizations –Ex. Cement Task Force – WBCSD Cement Sustainability Initiative Encouraging linkages of efforts of task forces to domestic regulatory requirements 7
