7 Objectives Focus is on knowledge transfer between academia and industry Support for creation, development and reinforcement and execution of strategic partnerships, aimed at knowledge sharing and inter-sector mobility, based on targeted human resources interaction Open to all disciplines – from Engineering to Social Sciences and Humanities Bottom-up – no pre-defined topics or priority areas

8 Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) Minimum configuration is a university and company (one in Ireland, one abroad) Funds staff exchange of –early stage (PhD) –experienced researchers (Postdocs) –Technical –Research managerial Also funds hiring of additional staff (experienced researchers)

9 Foster co-operation between non-commercial research organisations & commercial enterprises based on joint research projects. Stimulate long-term collaboration between sectors through secondment of researchers between the public & private research domains. Diverse career possibilities & research experience for researchers, knowledge sharing/cultural exchange. IAPP Objectives

15 IAPP Activities Joint Research Project Research of mutual interest to all partners Milestones & deliverables Secondments underpin co-operation between partners in different sectors Possibility to recruit experienced researchers Networking Activities Organisation of scientific/managerial network meetings Invitation of external experts Attendance at international conferences & workshops Electronic networking (internet webpages, email, video conferencing)

16 Community contributions Living allowance* € 38,000 / 19,000 per year (ESR: post-graduates) € 58,500 / 29,250 per year (ER: 4-10 years) € 87,500 / 43,750 per year (MER: > 10 years) Mobility / travel allowance* € 700 or 1000 per month Research/training/networking costs € 1800 per researcher-month Small equipment expenses for SMEs max. 10 % of SME contribution Overheads 10% of direct costs Management costs max. 10% of total contribution Gross amounts (rates for 2010) *Correction Coefficients apply; IE = 114.7 Fellow expenses Host expenses

17 What does IAPP offer? 100% funding Simple application procedure: short and precise Few reporting requirements – 2 main reports in 4 years Support – in particular NCPs Top class public and private sector evaluators Marie Curie label Networking and conference costs SMEs – equipment contribution

18 Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) Duration: 3-4 years Funds the associated salary costs and contribution to research, management and overheads Call open on 30 July 2010, deadline 7 December 2010 Budget €80 million Success rate 2009: 17% (Ireland 37%)

19 Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) Slow start in 2007… not a single successful proposal with Irish participation. Increased interest (and success!!) in 2008. 6 out of 9 Irish proposals funded. Only two of the seven universities involved in IAPPs.
