4 Historical Facts Defeated in World War I, Austria once a very powerful empire was minimized. They remained this way for a decade under annexation by Nazi Germany and victorious Allies. Austria was given independence in 1955, to which the treaty denounced unification with Germany and ended the occupation. That same year to have the Soviet military withdraw from Austria, a constitutional law declared this country perpetual neutrality. Altering this neutrality happened in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and in 1995 its entry into the European Union. In 1999 Austria became the EU Economic Monetary Union and was a prosperous and Democratic country.

5 Highlights  Great highlights in Austria are the slops! Really nice ski resorts are all over: in Kaprun, Kuhtai, and Hintertux where the temperatures are low and is keeping the snow in good shape. In the Arlberg resorts of Lech, Zurs, and St Anton the low temperatures have helped preserve the snow cover.
