4. Historical Facts Defeated in World War I, Austria once a very powerful empire was minimized. They remained this way for a decade under annexation by Nazi Germany and victorious Allies. Austria was given independence in 1955, to which the treaty denounced unification with Germany and ended the occupation. That same year to have the Soviet military withdraw from Austria, a constitutional law declared this country perpetual neutrality.
