3 These two continents contain many, many physical regions that are geographically connected. Here is how people adapted to the different regions

4 Here is what happened in these regions…. What changed in these regions? How did that happen?

5 Here is a very special region…

6 Here is what makes this region, and other River Valleys, so special… 4) From Village to City With the development of agriculture, people settled into farming villages. Over time, some of these villages grew into large cities. 3) Natural Highways River travel allowed early civilization to trade surplus goods, and new ideas. 2) New Activities Food surplus allowed people to pursue other activities like crafts, art, and writing. In fact, writing emerged in part to track the surplus. 1) Gift of the River River water was key to farming in early civilizations. Water was used for crops. This also led to people living near crops in villages.

9 Here is what happened in the region… How would you describe the difference between the first and second era shown?

10 Let’s see what we know… Are you ready to answer, or do you need a peek? Which pattern of settlement led to the original populating of Australia and Oceania? A The earliest settlers likely arrived from Southeast Asia and sailed to the islands across Oceania. B Most original inhabitants likely evolved from early humans arriving from Africa across the Indian Ocean. C There were no original inhabitants of most land in the region until the arrival of English and Dutch explorers. D Australia likely was populated by tribes sailing from South America while Oceania received most settlers from East Asia.
