Today’s Agenda  Warm-Up: pH Clicker Challenge  Classwork: “What is pH?” Homework Check pH Computer Assignment Check BrainPop Acids and Bases pH Properties Sort-it-Out Activity  Homework: None!  Conclusion: What is pH? What does pH stand for?

Student Objective Thursday, September 10, 2015 Students will be able to…  Define and describe how the pH of a substance is determined.  Identify some properties of acids and bases.

What is pH and how is it determined?

In your response be sure to include: Define pH and explain what pH stands for. Describe the pH scale and explain what it measures. Identify the characteristic properties of acids and bases. Define indicator, provide 2 examples of substances that are indicators, and explain how they work.

pH Computer Assignment Check http://sv.berkeley.edu/showcase/flash/juicebar.html What color does cabbage juice turn in acids, bases, and neutrals? Name 3 acids? 3 bases? 1 neutral? How do you make an acid become neutral? Base become neutral?

Visit the following websites to explore and learn about pH. http://sv.berkeley.edu/showcase/flash/juicebar.html http://www.miamisci.org/ph/phpanel.html http://pbskids.org/zoom/games/kitchenchemistry/virtual-start.html

The pH Scale http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/ph/

Which of the following is true about the pH scale? A.Substances with a pH below 7 are bases. B.Substances with pH above 7 are acids. C.Substances with a pH of exactly 7 are neutral. D.All of the above. ???

1. What causes a substance to be acidic? 2. What causes a substance to be basic? 3. Why is water neutral? 4. If you have acid indigestion why does antacid help you feel better? 5. What is an indicator? A substance is considered to be an acid when it has many hydrogen atoms. (Section 2) (Section 3) (Section 2 & 4) (Section 5)

1. What causes a substance to be acidic? 2. What causes a substance to be basic? 3. Why is water neutral? 4. If you have acid indigestion why does antacid help you feel better? 5. What is an indicator? A substance is considered to be an acid when it has many hydrogen atoms. A substance is considered to be basic when it contain a combination of hydrogen and oxygen atoms called hydroxyl groups. (Section 2) (Section 3) (Section 2 & 4) (Section 5)

A base has many of hydrogen and oxygen atoms combined in hydroxyl groups. (Alkaline is another word for base.) H O - H O - H O -

Water is neutral because it has a pH of 7 and has an equal number of hydrogen (H) and hydroxyl (OH) groups. (Section 2) (Section 3) (Section 2 & 4) (Section 5)

Water is neutral because every water molecule has one hydrogen (H + ) and one hydroxyl (OH - ). The positive and negative cancel each other out leaving a chemically neutral substance.Hydrogen Hydrogen-Oxygen

Water is neutral because it has a pH of 7 and has an equal number of hydrogen (H) and hydroxyl (OH) groups. (Section 2) (Section 3) Antacids make you feel better because they are a base and they help raise the pH of your stomach acid towards neutral. (Section 2 & 4) An indicator is a chemical that changes colors in an acid or base. (Section 5)

6. Give three examples of indicators: 7. Why should you brush your teeth more than once daily? 8. What is another word for basic substances? 9. How many times more acidic is a pH 4 compared to pH 7? Examples of indicators are litmus paper, Bromothymol blue, grape juice, cabbage juice, and some purple flowers. (Sections 5 & 6) You should brush your teeth more than once daily because the base toothpaste neutralizes the mouth and kills the bacteria that causes cavities, but soon the effect wears off and the bacteria return. (Section 4) Another word for a basic substance is alkaline. (Section 3) A pH 4 is 1000 times more acidic than pH 7 because the pH scale changes by powers of ten. (Section 5)

What is pH? Article

What do you know about substances that are acidic, basic (alkaline), or neutral? ACIDSBASES NEUTRAL

Acids and Bases http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/acidsandbases/

pH 1-6.9, Tastes sour and has many H HH Hydrogen atoms. Dissolve other substances. pH 7.1-14, Tastes bitter and has many H HH Hydrogen-Oxygen combinations. They feel slippery and make good cleaners. PROPERTIES

Can be balanced or neutralized with an acid. Higher pH number means more base. pH 7.1 to 14 Many hydrogen and oxygen ions combined in hydroxyl groups (OH-) Equal number of hydrogen ions (H+) & hydroxyl groups (OH-) pH 7 Distilled (pure) water is neutral Makes good cleaner Tastes bitter Many hydrogen ions (H+) pH 1 to 6.9 Lower pH number means more acidic. Can be balanced or neutralized with a base. Dissolves other substances Tastes sour Feels slippery

HOMEWORK NONE!!! Always copy daily homework into your agenda.

A mystery substance has many hydrogen atoms, tastes sour, and dissolves other substances. What is most likely the pH of this mystery liquid? A.pH 4 B.pH 7 C.pH 10 ???

A substance with a pH of 12 can be neutralized (pH balanced) by adding a strong base. A.True B.False ???

The “H” in pH stands for Hydrogen because pH is a measure of the amount of Hydrogen or Hydrogen-Oxygen combinations in a substance. A.True B.False ???
