Property representation in ISO 10303 Dr Norman Swindells CEng, FIMM Ferroday Limited DEPUIS Workshop, ENEA, 2008-04-14

Quantities and properties  Quantity is an amount of something A multiple of a unit amount – e.g 1MPa*35  Property is a characteristic of something May be defined by a particular process May be a property of a product or a process  Magnitude of a property can be described: Quantitatively – by a measuring a quantity, e.g. 35 MPa Qualitatively – by a comparison, e.g. ‘blue’  Magnitude of property value will depend on the conditions of a measurement process – the data environment

Types of properties  Simple – concept independent of method Use comparison with a standard quantity (length, time, weight, voltage, etc.) Different measurement methods produce the same result  Complex – concept defined by method Different measurement methods produce different properties  Magnitude of both types will depend on the conditions of the measurement process – the data environment

Role of properties Product properties Eco- Design Re-use Disposal plan Disposal methods Disposal records Product manufacture

Use of properties  Enable: Reuse of products – from longer life of information Recycle of materials – from more complete information Reduce use of resources – from wider availability of process information

Types of property data  Life cycle assessment LCA  Environmental impact (LCIA)  Environmental measurements  Landfill records  Disposal/recycling records  Hazardous product information  Hazardous process information  Hazardous location information  Etc.

STEP and properties

SC4 Standards for properties  ISO 10303-45 Materials and other engineering properties Integrated generic resource for any property of a product  ISO 10303-235 Engineering properties for product design and validation Processes for the determination of a product property

ISO 10303-45  Association of a property with a product or with a part of a product  Association of a property value with its data environment  Chemical composition of a product  Resources to specify the uncertainty and reliability of a property value  EXPRESS-G EXPRESS-G

Data environment Product_ definition Material_ property Material_ Property_ representation Representation Characterised _object Material_ property Property_ definition_ representation Representation Product property Data environment

ISO 10303-235 Engineering properties for product design and validation  Application of STEP generic resources  Relates the meaning of a property to the testing and validation processes  Provides an audit trail from the property value to its origin in a test and validation processtest and validation process  Information model for any property measured by any processprocess Uses ISO 13584 data dictionaries for the terminology of specific property domains

ISO 10303-235 : scope  Product  Properties  Processes and methods  Numerical values  Mathematical values  Substance and structure  Administration data  Approvals, certification  Documents  External references  Effectivity  Requirements  Resources  Tolerances

Application to ISO 14048 data  CASCADE project mapped the requirements specified in ISO 14048 on to appropriate information objects in ISO 10303-235  ISO14048 Mapping ISO14048 Mapping

Conclusions  ISO 10303 has several resources for the represention of property data  Standardised representations of property data are required in many environmental situations  The DEPUIS project has e-learning courses for ISO 10303-45 and ISO 10303-235
