7. As the Economy Goes, so Goes… Literature, Art, Philosophy, and Science – Augustan & Neoclassical Age: These titles of this era pay homage to the Roman emperor Octavian, who returned Rome to a state of peace and clam after Caesar’s death. The Stuarts, specifically, Charles II, did the same for London and England. In literature and philosophy, authors and writers made a conscious effort to “return” to classical ideas and styles. – These ideas represented permanence and universality. King Charles II officially called for a stripping down of English prose. – Writing was “too pretty”  desired more exact, precise, less figurative language; and above all, SHORTER SENTENCES!

8. Enlightenment & Age of Reason King Charles II was an amateur chemist himself, and founded the Royal Society of London and the Royal Society of London for the Promotion of Natural Knowledge Science was the “cool” thing to do… People were not only interested in the “how” of phenomenon, but the “why”? Simple observation goes a long way in helping to add meaning to phenomena. The rise of Deism – God the Creator, but the universe/earth functioning on its own. When science can rationally describe why things happen, it leads to a crisis of faith. Some notable figures: – Francis Bacon – Edmund Halley – Robert Hooke – Robert Boyle – John Locke – Isaac Newton – Thomas Paine

Your best friend has been arrested for illegally downloading music. While in jail, he asks you to go to his house and clear everything off his computer. Jonathan Swift Principal English prose writer of the early 18 th century & England’s greatest satirist Anglo-Irish – Lived in Ireland, but regarded himself as an Englishman – Not Catholic  Anglican Born in Dublin, but moved to England at 3 years old to live with his uncle Godwin His uncle paid for his early education Got an “office job”  opportunity for advancement Went to Oxford and was ordained a priest in the Church of Ireland, a counterpart to the Church of England. Served in rural churches, which was not a good fit for him. Eventually, after appointments in England fell through, he became the dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.

21. “A Modest Proposal” Describes the desperate conditions in Ireland, which was under English rule, and the treatment of the Irish people. Published in 1729: – Terrible farm crop – Little left to feed themselves after they sold their crops, which went to English landlords for rent payments! – Beggars and starving children were everywhere. – Money was in short supply. Swift believed that most of the money was essentially squandered by the landlords. English policies kept the Irish poor.
