33 Commercial Electronics vs. Avionics General Misconceptions.... Installing systems on an aircraft with Commercial Off-The Shelf (COTS) components can not be done. Installing COTS is discouraged by the FAA. COTS based equipment is sub-standard to aviation electronics. Reality.... As long as COTS components meet certification standards, the FAA can and has approved them. Aircraft and Avionics OEMs are using COTS components more and more in their equipment.

35 APPLICATION LAYER 7 The application layer is closest to the end user, both the OSI application layer and the user interact directly with the software application.

36 PHYSICAL LAYER 1 The physical layer, the lowest layer of the OSI model. It describes the electrical, mechanical, and functional interfaces to the physical medium, and carries the signals for all of the higher layers. 40 ECTRONIC FLIGHT BAGS (EFB) AC 120-76A provides guidance for the certification, airworthiness, and operational approval of electronic flight bag (EFB) computing devices. Three distinct classes of EFB hardware devices are defined according to their relative integration with onboard resources such as electric power, data connectivity, and mounting.

41 EFB Class I Class 1 hardware are portable COTS laptop or pen tablet computers with software applications. Class 1 do not require certification, but they must be stowed for takeoff and landing.
