Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990 Fighting over oil, Iraq thought Kuwait was drilling in their oil fields

4 Key People/Events Saddam Hussein (leader of Iraq) ordered invasion of Kuwait, August 2,1990. UN placed worldwide ban of trade with Iraq on August 6, 1990 US and western European NATO allies moved into Saudi Arabia in a movement known as Operation Desert Shield. On November 29, 1990, UN Security Council authorized the use of force against Iraq if there was no withdrawal from Kuwait. The war started on January 16-17, 1991 with US led air offensive known as Operation Desert Storm. On February 24, 1991 allied ground offensive was launched. Kuwait was liberated within three days. President George Bush declared cease fire on February 28,1991.
