Periodic Table 101 Use your arrow keys to advance and go back in this presentation.

Now that you have made a classification table with only 10 elements, imagine trying to keep the 112 naturally occurring elements straight on one page and having that one page tell several pieces of information about each element.

Welcome to the periodic table. You can see the periodic table at http://www.chemicalelements.com and http://www.webelements.com. http://www.chemicalelements.comhttp://www.webelements.com.

The king of chemical classification is Dimitri Mendeleev. Mendeleev organized the 63 elements that had been identified by 1869 onto a simple chart, forming the basis for the modern periodic table. Go to http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/dimitrime ndeleev.html and read about Dimitri Mendeleev. http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/dimitrime ndeleev.html

Question #1 In your online lab notebook, write 1 paragraph about how Mendeleev created the periodic table.

Review the atomic structure and read about atomic number and atomic mass at http://library.thinkquest.org/10429/l ow/atomic/atomic/htm Use this information to fill in the blanks for questions #2 and #3.

Question #2 The atomic number is the smaller number in each periodic table box. ATOMIC NUMBER = THE NUMBER OF ___________________.

Question #3 The atomic weight is the larger number in each periodic table box. ATOMIC WEIGHT = THE NUMBER OF PROTONS + THE NUMBER OF ___________.

Use the answers to questions #2 and #3 to complete the rest of this assignment.

Question #4 If Aluminum has an atomic weight of 27 and an atomic number of 13, how many neutrons does Aluminum contain?

Question #5 Bonjour!! If Francium has an atomic weight of 223 and contains 137 neutrons, what is Francium’s atomic number?

Question #6 Use www.chemicalelements.com or www.webelements.com to identify the following atom.www.chemicalelements.comwww.webelements.com

Question #7 Use www.chemicalelements.com or www.webelements.com to identify the following atom.www.chemicalelements.comwww.webelements.com

Question #8 Use www.chemicalelements.com or www.webelements.com to identify the following atom.www.chemicalelements.comwww.webelements.com

Question #9 Use www.chemicalelements.com or www.webelements.com to identify the following atom.www.chemicalelements.comwww.webelements.com

Question #10 How many protons, neutrons, and electrons does chlorine have?

Question #11 Describe in one sentence why each element is different from each other.
