1 Warm-Up: November 5, 2014 Write a point-tester equation for the line that passes through the point (6, 5) with a slope of 2/3.

2 Homework Questions?

3 Linear Equations and Graphs
Investigation 4A Advanced Integrated Math I

4 Essential Question How can we write the equation of a line?

5 Lines The slope between any two points on a line is constant.
The slope of a line is the slope between any two points on the line. You can write the equation of a line if you know its slope and any point on the line.

6 Example 1 Write the equation of the line that passes through (3, 7) and (-2, 4).

7 You-Try #1 Write the equation of the line that passes through (-1, 4) and (3, 12).

8 Parallel Lines Lines are parallel if they have the same slope but do not overlap.

13 Homework Questions?

14 Essential Questions What is the fastest/easiest way to graph a line?
How can we determine the slope of a line from its equation?

15 Graphing Lines Two points determine a line.
Find any two points, plot them, then draw a line through them.

16 Intercepts The point where the line crosses the x-axis is called the x-intercept. Substitute 0 for y and solve for x. The point where the line crosses the y-axis is called the y-intercept. Substitute 0 for x and solve for y.

17 You-Try Find the x-intercept and y-intercept, then graph

18 Forms of an Equation Point-Slope Form Slope-Intercept Form
Plug in slope for m and point coordinates for x1 and y1 Slope-Intercept Form The slope is m and the y-intercept is b Standard Form Slope is –A/B

19 You-Try A line has slope ½ and passes through the point (6.8, 3.5). Write the equation of the line in both point-slope form and slope-intercept form.

23 Warm-Up: November 7, 2014 Stanley leaves his house at 8:00 AM. He rides his bike to the park at a constant 15 ft/s. Johnny, Stanley’s older brother, leaves 10 minutes after Stanley, and rides his bike at a constant 20 ft/s along the same road to the same park. How far has each boy traveled at 8:20? How far has each boy traveled at 8:45? How can you find the exact time that Johnny catches up with Stanley?

24 8:20 8:45 exact time Warm-Up

26 Page 292 #1 Answers Yakov 2 s 40 ft Yakov: 20 ft/s, Demitri: 10 ft/s
y=20x y=10x+20 20x=10x+20; x=2

27 Page 292 #2 Answers They run at the same speed
Yakov never overtakes Demitri 20 ft/s (both) y=20x y=20x+20

28 Page 292 #3 Answers Yakov starts ahead and stays ahead
No, the graphs keep getting further apart, and do not continue to the left of t=0 (-2, -20) if they did continue No
