Making Connections: How do these initiatives support student success?

Florida’s Common Core State Standards Implementation Timeline Year/Grade Level K123-89-12 2011-2012FLLLLL 2012-2013F L LLL 2013-2014 CCSS fully implemented F L B L 2014-2015 CCSS fully implemented and assessed F L F - full implementation of CCSS for all content areas L - full implementation of content area literacy standards including: (1) text complexity, quality and range in all grades (K-12), and (2) CCSS Literacy Standards in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (6-12) B - blended instruction of CCSS with Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS); last year of NGSSS assessed on FCAT 2.0

The End in Mind Purposeful instruction starts with teachers knowing the desired outcomes. What students will: Know facts, details, terms, how-to, strategies Understand generalized statements about the concept that will continue to develop throughout lifelong learning Do actions the students will take to demonstrate their learning

Shifts in ELA/ Literacy Shift 1Balancing Informational & Literary Text Students read a true balance of informational and literary texts. Shift 2Knowledge in the DisciplinesStudents build knowledge about the world (domains/ content areas) through TEXT rather than the teacher or activities Shift 3Staircase of ComplexityStudents read the central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient, create more time and space and support in the curriculum for close reading. Shift 4Text-based AnswersStudents engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text. Shift 5Writing from SourcesWriting emphasizes use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument. Shift 6Academic VocabularyStudents constantly build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex texts. This can be done effectively by spiraling like content in increasingly complex texts. 7

Concepts of Print (K-1) Phonemic Awareness (K-1) Phonics (K-5) Fluency (K-5) English Language Arts: Reading Foundational Skills

Shifts in Mathematics Shift 1FocusTeachers significantly narrow and deepen the scope of how time and energy is spent in the math classroom. They do so in order to focus deeply on only the concepts that are prioritized in the standards. Shift 2CoherencePrincipals and teachers carefully connect the learning within and across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years. Shift 3FluencyStudents are expected to have speed and accuracy with simple calculations; teachers structure class time and/or homework time for students to memorize, through repetition, core functions. Shift 4Deep Understanding Students deeply understand and can operate easily within a math concept before moving on. They learn more than the trick to get the answer right. They learn the math. Shift 5ApplicationStudents are expected to use math and choose the appropriate concept for application even when they are not prompted to do so. Shift 6Dual IntensityStudents are practicing and understanding. There is more than a balance between these two things in the classroom – both are occurring with intensity. 10

How might CCSS implementation impact a school’s MTSS?

PARCC Assessment Design English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics, Grades 3-11 14 End-of-Year Assessment Innovative, computer- based items Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) Extended tasks Applications of concepts and skills Summative, Required assessment Interim, optional assessment Diagnostic Assessment Early indicator of student knowledge and skills to inform instruction, supports, and PD ELA - Speaking And Listening Assessment Locally scored Non-summative, required Optional Assessments/Flexible Administration Mid-Year Assessment Performance-based Emphasis on hard-to- measure standards Potentially summative

PARCC – Sample Item – 3 rd Grade ELA

Center on Instruction DESIGNING AND DELIVERING INTENSIVE INTERVENTIONS INTENSIVE INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS STRUGGLING IN READING AND MATH

Think-Pair-Share 1 Way Common Core will impact the tiers of instruction/intervention. 2 ways school psychologists can build their knowledge of instructional practices and evidence-based interventions.
