How are the CCSS ORGANIZED?

You don’t have to remember all of this! It might help you to organize your thinking when you start to look at the CCSS for your grade level.

English Language Arts CCSS Three Sections –Section I Standards for ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects K-5 –Section II Standards for English Language Arts 6-12 –Section III Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 6-12 From Navigation Implementation of the CCSS Book I, Douglas Reeves, 2011

Section I Standards for ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies Science, and Technical Subjects K-5  Reading standards for literature K-5 (RL)  Reading standards for informational text K-5 (RI)  Reading standards: foundational skills K-5 (RF)  Writing standards K-5 (W)  Speaking and listening standards K-5 (SL)  Language standards K-5 (L)

Section II Standards for English Language Arts 6-12  Reading standards for literature 6-12 (RL)  Reading standards for informational text 6- 12(RI)  Writing standards 6-12 (W)  Speaking and listening standards 6-12 (SL)  Language standards 6-12 (L)

Section III Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects 6-12  Reading standards for literacy in history/social studies 6-12 (RH)  Reading standards for literacy in science and technical subjects 6-12 (RST)  Writing standards for literacy in History/social studies, science, and technical subject 6-12 (WHST)

The CCSS for Mathematics  The infrastructure of the CCSS for mathematics (CCSSM) differs from the infrastructure of the CCSS for ELA.  The CCSSM are written to assume mastery, in any given year, of the preceding year’s standards.  The CCSSM document is organized into three distinct sections.

Mathematics CCSS Three Sections –Section I The Standards for mathematical practices –Section II The Standards for mathematical content for grades K-8 –Section III The Standards for Mathematical content for high school From Navigation Implementation of the CCSS Book I, Douglas Reeves, 2011

Section I: The Standards for Mathematical Practices Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Section II: The Standards for Mathematical Content for Grades K-8  The CCSS for math content are organized in DOMAINS, CLUSTERS AND STANDARDS within each grade level.  The preamble for each grade level begins with explicit descriptors of critical focal point for how best to use mathematics instructional time throughout the school year.  No more than four critical areas of study are emphasized in any given grade level.  Following the preamble, a overview page succinctly outlines each domain and cluster for a given grade.  Grade Specific standards are then organized within clusters.

THE CCSSM are organized by: Domains are larger groups of related standards. Standards from different domains may sometimes be closely related Clusters, within the domains, are groups of related standards. Standards from different clusters may sometimes be closely related, because mathematics is a connected subject. Standards, within the clusters, define what students should understand and be able to do at each grade level.

Section III : The Standards for Mathematical content for high school  Number and Quantity  Algebra  Functions  Geometry  Statistics and Probability (Just for your information)

REMEMBER: You don’t have to remember all of this! Hopefully it will help the standards make sense as we begin to look at them!

How can we best help students prepare for the Common Core? According to Douglas Reeves, founder of The Leadership and Learning Center: Review the CCSS and highlight the standards you are already teaching. Commit to increasing informational writing in every discipline at every grade level. Examine carefully the requirements of your math curriculum

BOOKMARK THIS SITE! www.corestandards.org Look on your iPad for the Common Core App. Let’s explore!!

The Standards Spiral Do on own: –Copy the Standard for your grade level on poster paper –write what I am doing/what I can do Then share with grade level JS-GS General good (optional)
