3 Controlling the Nile For centuries, the Egyptians tried to control floodwaters on the Nile. The Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970. It created Lake Nasser. The creation of dams forced local tribes to move.

4 Oil in Nigeria: Harming Environment
Nigeria – 6th leading oil exporter in the world. More than 4,000 oil spills in more than 40 years. Slow cleanup operations and fires.

5 Desertification of the Sahel
Sahel - Dry grassland that runs E-W along the southern edge of the Sahara. People in the area use it for farming and herding.

Desertification - Moving of dry conditions into moist areas next to desert. Normally, it’s long term, but humans are causing it to speed up in the Sahel.
