2 2 ABOUT US Tuakiri is a formal national federation of member institutions focused on creating a common framework for collaborative trust in support of research and education. We are no different from rest of you, just a bit small: 2 Goal: To make sharing of protected online resources easier, safer, and more scalable in our age of digital resources and services. Tuakiri is NZ’s national access federation service for the NZ higher education and research sector, established in 2011 by MBIE (formerly MSI). The entity is a not-for-profit incorporated crown entity.

3 RESILIENT NATIONAL SERVICE 3 Tuakiri is a resilient national service and in production use: – 45 Organisations registered – 16 Production Identity Providers – 59 Service Providers, and growing Tuakiri is a successful national service and a great example of NZ’s Tertiary Education and Research sector driven initiative, currently serving its members: – transform and change the future of learning; – make a positive impact across agencies; – bring efficiency in use of ICT technologies; – eliminate and reduce duplication of effort and cost; – enable research collaboration nationally and global scale (in the future)

6 CREATING VALUE 6 Strengthening the value proposition, as a commonly shared service benefit the members and users by reducing or eliminating duplication of effort and cost by providing FIM-aaS:  Enable relevant national & international R&E SPs, eResearch Infrastructure;  Onboard IdPs (ITP, ITO sector);  Implement Compliance - Levels of Assurance program;  Pilot EduGAIN interfederation jointly with AAF Inc. and enable: o Trans-Tasman eResearch Collaboration o Access to shared services Building-on  Easy and secure access to online resources;  Efficient and effective, help reduce duplication of effort and costs across the sector;  Scalable, supports Service Provider market growth (50);  Provision of fabric of trust platform;  Reduced risk, compliance with NZ Privacy Act 1993;  Built-in service resiliency;  Developed with global best practice (Federation Operators Group) and legal counsel advice;  A national service for NZ R & E, Industry and Govt. Agencies. Sorted “National Federated Identity Management for Education, Research, Industry and Govt. Agency Collaboration”:  Collaborate and partner with Service Providers, Govt Agencies, and Industry;  Enable Research, Scholarly and Business services;  Enable sector wide sharing of services;  Support Government’s Digital Environment Strategy “Result 10 Blueprint” and NZ Govt. ICT Strategy and Action Plan 2017;  Discussions with DIA NZ Govt OoCIO Focus Areas

8 NZ-AU INTERFEDERATION 8 AAF-Tuakiri initiative is underway to join eduGAIN interfederation framework. Strategy, Policy, Rule, and Risks are being looked at. Initial pilot service launch ETA is Q4, 2015 (updates will be provided by AAF and Tuakiri as progress is made) The potential of interfederation capability: – enable cross border research between AU and NZ, and beyond – connect researchers with their counterparts globally – access for international collaborators with AAF & Tuakiri connected research capabilities – global service providers once only centrally integrate teaching and learning and research collaboration online resources – AU and NZ Institutions/Faculties can push their services upstream to other eduGAIN members

9 9 CONNECT, COLLABORATE & SHARE Research and Education (R&E) collaboration has been a powerful force for global discovery and innovation. Expanding and enhancing this collaboration into the future requires a basis of trusted access, authentication, identity management, and security. Trust, Identity and Middleware solutions developed and provided by Tuakiri is the foundation that bridges research and scholarly experiences and resources between physical campuses, remote users and service providers around the world. Tuakiri’s Federated Identity Management Service aims to take the NZ Research and Education sector’s work a step further to enable seamless single-sign-on academic access for students, academics, researchers and professional staff, by providing a secure national service that allows an online user to authenticate locally, and access or share resources national and globally.
