3 TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 TODAY WE ARE: 1) Identifying & correcting sentence fragments (grammar), 2) Reviewing capitalization rules (mechanics), 3) Editing a rough draft to correct fragments & capitalization errors. HOW? WHAT WILL THIS LOOK LIKE?

4 TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 GRAMMAR & MECHANICS: Grammar can be defined as a set of rules that govern how people speak a particular language. These rules govern how language speakers form acceptable sentences. Example-French/Spanish grammar: nouns then adjectives. English grammar: adjective then noun.

5 TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 GRAMMAR & MECHANICS: Mechanics refers more specifically to rules (aka conventions) that govern written language. Examples: *Underlining titles *Capitalizing proper nouns *Spelling rules (I before E except after C or when sounding like A as in neighbor & weigh)

7 TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 SENTENCE VS. SENTENCE FRAGMENT: A sentence relates a complete idea: Who (subject) & what they do (verb). Planes soar. Trees grow. A fragment is a piece or part of a sentence. It is either missing a subject (who) OR the verb (what they do)

9 TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 FIXING SENTENCE FRAGMENTS: There are several ways to fix fragments. Sometimes it's best just to add the missing subject or verb. Sometimes it's better to combine your fragment with another sentence. Combining usually means adding a comma & a conjunction.

Divide each sentence right in front of your verb (action word). Example: Several weeks later, I felt much better. Several weeks later, I / felt much better.

12 TARGET TIME: DAY 11 WORKSHOP 2 KILLER PLAGUES December 11, 2012 FIX ANY FRAGMENTS YOU FIND: EITHER BY: A) ADDING THE MISSING WORD/PHRASE. B) COMBINING THE FRAGMENT INTO ANOTHER SENTENCE (combining=comma & conjunction).
