Mariah Cordie and Deb Norrell

What is CyberKnife?  World’s first and only robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors throughout the body non- invasively.

Procedure  Prior to procedure, CT is needed to determine size, shape, and extent of tumor.  Treatment plan is created  Each treatment session will last between 30-90 minutes depending on tumor type and location  Hypofractionation is used  Will be treated over 1-5 days

History  Developed by John Adler, MD  First patient was treated in 1994 with a prototype  Approved by FDA in 2001  First approved CyberKnife appeared at Stanford in Oct. 2001  Stanford opened 2 nd unit in 2006- first institution in the world to have 2 Cyberknife units in operation.

Benefits  It provides pain-free, non-surgical option for patients who have inoperable or surgically complex tumors.  No anesthesia or hospitalization needed  Greater comfort (patient can breathe normally during treatment)  Little or no recovery time  Immediate return to normal activities

What does it treat?  Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body.  Prostate  Lung  Brain  Liver  Spine  Pancreas  Kidney

Side effects  Acute: Nausea Fatigue Injury to nearby tissues  Prostate: constipation, urinary retention, blood in stool, injury to bladder wall, and erectile dysfunction  Brain: Headache, increase intracranial pressure, seizures, edema, necrosis, and neural tissue injury

Advances in Technology  Synchrony® Respiratory Tracking System This tracking system continuously synchronizes beam delivery to the motion of the tumor, allowing clinicians to significantly reduce margins, while eliminating the need for gating or breath-holding techniques.  RoboCouch® Patient Positioning System This robotic system precisely aligns patients enabling faster patient setup.

Locations  150 locations Worldwide, 100 in the US  Miller-Dwan Medical Center Duluth, MN  St. Joseph’s Hospital St. Paul, MN  Appleton Medical Center Appleton, WI  Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center Milwaukee, WI  Waukesha Memorial Hospital Waukesha, WI
