8 Cars and Gas The average cost of a new car was $1,510 in 1950 and by the end of the decade was $2,200. Even a Chevrolet Corvette was only $3,631 in 1958. A Cadillac convertible sold for $5,400 in 1959 with a 325 horsepower engine. The average price for a gallon of gas in 1950 was 18 cents with the price at the end of the decade being 25 cents.
