2 Meals of the Day Ientâculum (breakfast) – Chiefly of bread, wine, cheese – Not always eaten Prandium (lunch) – Cheese, cold cuts, vegetables, nuts, leftovers from cena – More like a snake Cena (dinner) – Meat, vegetable, egg, and fruit – Wine – Usually eaten in the late afternoon while it was still daylight – Wealthier classes could dine further into the evening Secundae Mensae (dessert) – Usally fruit and wine Comissatio – Final wine course at dinner's end

3 The Dining Experience Ate in the Triclinium Set up with a three-couch arrangement (triklinio) – Couch = lecti Only the men reclined, the women would sit Food was pre-cut by slaves so that it could be eaten with one hand Guests would often bring their own napkins (mappae) and take home food they did not eat from their own plates

4 Roman Food and Drink Garum = fish sauce, staple of Roman cooking Mulsum = wine sweetened with honey Eggs Meat: fish (expensive and rare), poultry, pork, game (duck, hare) – Beef was not very popular porcus Troianus – Whole pig stuffed with sausages and fruit

5 The Commissatio Drinking party after dinner, only for male guests Wore coronae Drank wine out of a drinking cup called a poculum Arbiter bibendi was appointed to determine strength of the wine – Undiluted wine was called merum – Choosen by throwing knucklebones Toasts: bene + dative

6 Knucklebones Threw Four Tali – Four sides with values of 1, 3, 4, and 6 Venus – Highest throw – All four tali come up with different numbers Canis – Lowest throw – All ones
