1 ALGAE

2 ALGAE 1st plants to appear on earth Multicellular Non Vascular
No true root, stems, leaves, or tubes to transport materials No seeds Must live in or near water 3 types of algae separated by pigment color

3 TYPES OF ALGAE Brown Algae Red Algae Green Algae

4 BROWN ALGAE Float on or near surface of salt water
Held up by sacs called Air Bladders Provide home for many sea animals Ex. Sargassum, kelp, rockweed

5 BROWN ALGAE USES: Food for humans and livestock Algins
used in salad dressings to make them smooth and keep them from separating Thickening agent in ice cream and marshmellows

6 RED ALGAE Many different shapes Usually grow attached to rocks
Clumps of delicate red threads Large rounded, flat sheets Hard stiff branches Usually grow attached to rocks Live deeper in the ocean than any other algae

7 RED ALGAE Red pigments transfer the small amount of light to the chlorophyll for photosynthesis Uses: Food Fertilizer Carrageenans: in foods, jellies, lotions Agar- used in science labs

8 GREEN ALGAE Live in freshwater Some live with Fungi (Lichen)
Some live in the bodies of worms, sponges , or protists Land plants are believed to have evolved from green algae

9 GREEN ALGAE Land plants are believed to have evolved from green algae
-have similar life cycles, pigments and stored food supplies.
