Transpiration- Phototrophism Lab
2
Day 1: Planning Get in a NEW lab group. No more than 2 members can be the same from your last lab on photosynthesis Re-read your notes on Transpiration and phototrophism As a group, decide what type of lab you would like to do Design a rough procedure of your lab Control? Environmental factors to be tested for transpiration? (only light will be used for phototrophism) How will you alter the variables? Make a rough list of materials that may be needed for your lab Create a time line for the execution of your lab. You only have two class periods, but the room is open at lunch, 6 th -7 th period, and after school per request. YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NEED HOURS vs. an hour for your readings. Will you run all variables at once over a 24 hr period of time? Or one a day for 3 days?

Day 1: Materials that may be needed Plants!!!!! (How many will you need?-Don’t plan on using the same plant twice.) or you might buy a larger plant and use its stems- breaking off a fresh piece each time. These are all decisions that need to be made BEFORE you start your lab. Light sources/light bulbs (150 watts are too hot to leave on over a 24 hr period of time) We can’t have a fire hazard. If you leave them on during the school day and come in to take readings that is fine, but I will turn them off when I leave. You may want to bring a lower wattage bulb, or an LED light source. Remember: If we just want light intensity, we don’t want temperature increase. If you want temperature increase, you can use lights that generate heat. Remember we have two periods using the light stands, so either bring your own light source (like a flash light) or you will need to sign-up for any use of the Light stands throughout the week. Day 2: Planning As a group: Make a FORMAL list of materials you will need for your lab. Remember that I have some materials available for you, but you will provide the majority of materials. If you need light, you may need to bring your own lightbulb that is a lower wattage than I have available to you (150 watts). YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN PLANTS!!!! They can stay in the room during the labs, and can be taken home after the lab is complete. Choose your plant wisely. Determine who is bringing what to the lab on Monday. YOU NEED TO TRUST YOUR GROUP MATES. If someone is absent all the time, do not assign them materials. If they are absent either Monday or Tuesday, they will complete the lab completely on their own time and will no longer be part of your group. Develop your procedure Draw a sketch of your experimental set-up ( you will include a real picture in your formal lab)

Day 2: Planning On your own: Start the rough draft of your lab: Write a purpose Write your background Write a hypothesis. Use your notes/ textbook to help you formulate Identify the control, Independent variables, dependent variables, constants etc..

Day 3-4: Execution of Lab As a group: You will execute your lab. You may leave labs running during other periods, and you may come in at lunch, 6 th / 7 th period, and/or after school per request. Remember we have two periods using the light stands, so either bring your own light source (like a flash light) or you will need to sign-up for any use of the Light stands throughout the week. Formal lab reports due Friday March 6 th
