Teachers analyze student learning: Think systematically and critically about learning in their classroom: why learning happens and what can be done to improve student achievement Collect and analyze student performance data to improve effectiveness

6 Points to Ponder about Element A: When a large number of students fail a test, the teacher realizes that the method used to deliver instruction was not effective for most of the class.(Developing) The teacher brainstorms changes to instruction that can be made. The teacher realizes that lesson plans must be consistently analyzed and adapted to fit the needs of individual students each year. The teacher can regularly explain to the principal how instruction is planned using results from assessment data collected by the teacher. The teacher needs to critically analyze the why, looking at all details of instruction. The teacher will discuss informal assessments and how those assessments impact instruction.

9 Points to Ponder about Element B: Teachers participate in professional development only to earn enough CEU’s renew their licenses (Developing) In order to learn new strategies, effective teachers participate in professional development in their discipline area. (Proficient) Teachers choose staff development topics that will allow them to meet the needs of their diverse learners more effectively. (Accomplished) To be Distinguished, the teacher must appropriately implement the strategies learned in professional development sessions.

12 Points to Ponder about Element C: Principal shares new research from Curriculum meetings. (Developing) To be Proficient, the teacher should be able to demonstrate that they have tried ideas shared with them. The teacher investigates further and uses innovative strategies appropriately. (Accomplished) After the teacher has tried the new approaches, he/she compares the results. “Did this method of delivering instruction change how my students learned?” The teacher’s positive attitude toward change is key to this standard.

13 The Reflection Cycle Refer to handouts on reflection cycle. –Teachers need to review the stages of the reflection process. –These stages will be excellent points of discussion between teachers and administrators.

14 Reminders To maintain consistency throughout the county, teachers are being trained in the same format for each session of the training. Review all five standards for the next stage of training.
