Advanced Farming Systems (AFS) Greg Peterson Instructor Diesel Equipment Technology MSCTC Moorhead MN

AFS Case IH precision farming system Uses Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to optimize operator efficiency Provides field mapping Yield & moisture monitoring – Sensors measure crop flow, moisture and temperature and ground speed

AFS (cont) Prevents overlap Provides year to year optimization Can be transferred to different equipment Partnered with Trimble Precision planting Precision fertilizer application Assisted steering

GPS Uses 24 satellites to locate position –

Satellites put into orbit by US government for the military 1980s was made available for civilian use No cost to use Accurate to within 15 meters Need a correction for more accuracy Minimum 3 satellites for location – (longitude & latitude) 4 or more satellites for location and elevation

Corrections DGPS (Differential GPS) with beacon correction 8 inches pass to pass – The beacon receiver, at a known location, receives GPS signals. The beacon generates an equation. This equation is then sent to the GPS antennae on the vehicle- which then applies the correction.

Corrections DGPS with WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) & Omnistar correction services – 6 to 8 inches pass to pass – Correction signal sent to WAAS or Omnistar satellite then back to GPS on vehicle which applies the correction

Corrections RTK (Real Time Kinematic) +/- 1 inch accuracy pass to pass and +/- 1 inch year to year repeatable – Base station set up within a 6 mile radius – Can be portable – Must be set on same spot every year

Pass to pass accuracy A Trimble GPS receiver with +/- 4 inch pass to pass accuracy means you get less than 4 inch skip or overlap 95% of the time

Year to year accuracy A +/- 1 inch accuracy means you can drive the same rows next year within 1 inch 95% of the time.

Benefits Aides or controls steering – Reduces operator fatigue – Integral steering control hydraulically – EZ-Steer system – Light bar – Straight rows Can control fertilizer application Prevents skips and overlaps Reduces compaction

Trimble demo video http://www.ez-steer.com/demo.shtmlwww.ez-steer.com/demo.shtml

One customer…. On one 1500 acre application… – Decreased overlap saved $7500 in ammonia – Reduced fuel consumption by $600

Lab Exercises Locate components on equipment Learn monitor operation Set up a course Operate equipment
