2 Popular Sovereignty All political power resides with the people

3 Limited Government Government may only do the things that people have given it the power to do

4 Separation of Power The basic powers are distributed- separated- among three independent branches of government

5 Checks and balances Each branch is subject to a number of constitutional checks by the other branches

6 Judicial Review The power of the courts to determine whether what government does is in accord with what the Constitution provides

7 Federalism The division of power among a central government and several regional governments
