Popular Sovereignty All political power resides with the people

Limited Government Government may only do the things that people have given it the power to do

Separation of Power The basic powers are distributed- separated- among three independent branches of government

Checks and balances Each branch is subject to a number of constitutional checks by the other branches

Judicial Review The power of the courts to determine whether what government does is in accord with what the Constitution provides

Federalism The division of power among a central government and several regional governments
