5 Batteries 4 AAA cells What happens when batteries replaced or installed? Low battery indication Install according to procedure in manual Do not force batteries into compartment 1) The AN/UDR-13 is powered by 4 1.5V AAA batteries. 2) When the batteries are replaced or installed, the AN/UDR-13 will be defaulted to SLEEP mode. To exit SLEEP mode, press the ON/OFF button to return the AN/UDR-13 to the Rate display. 3) A low battery indication (a “BAT” or “b”) on the display window of the AN/UDR-13 lets the user know it is time to replace the batteries. 4) Install/replace the batteries according to the procedure in the Operator’s Manual. Make sure the new batteries are inserted straight into the battery box. Ensure that the new batteries are fully seated before attempting to close the battery door. DO NOT force the batteries into the battery box. If one or more of the batteries are sticking up above the others, remove the batteries and re-insert them so that they are straight. DO NOT try to force the lid on the battery compartment shut.

6 Self Check and Turn On ON/OFF button CLR/TEST for Self Check
1) The ON/OFF button is used to turn ON and OFF the Radiac Set. * To turn the unit ON, press and hold the ON/OFF button until a series of numbers (0-4) start to be displayed. You can release the button as soon as the first number appears. This will be followed by a full display. * To turn the unit OFF, press the ON/OFF button until the word “OFF” followed by three dashes appears. Then release the ON/OFF button. 2) The AN/UDR-13 has a built-in self check function that determines whether it is operating normally or if any fault occurs. CLR/TEST button is used for this purpose. Press and hold the CLR/TEST button until the entire display is shown (888 plus all of the icons). The UDR-13 will proceed through an automatic self-check. If it terminates in a flashing “9”, the unit is operating correctly. After 10 seconds, the unit will revert to the rate mode. If a flashing “0” is shown, the unit has a fault. Turn it off and then back on and try the self-test again. If the test ends in a flashing “0”, notify your supervisor. The CLR/TEST button is also used to change the alarm set point for Rate and Dose.

1) The RATE button is used to put the AN/UDR-13 into the RATE mode. Rate is the instantaneous amount of radiation being measured. The combination of the RATE button and the ALARM button is used for Rate Alarm Setting. The RATE button when combined with the ON/OFF button will put the AN/UDR-13 into SLEEP mode. 2) The DOSE button is used to put the AN/UDR-13 into the DOSE mode. Dose is the accumulated amount of radiation measured or absorbed over a period of time. Press the dose button until the DOSE icon appears at the top of the display and brackets are displayed. After a few seconds, the total dose will be displayed. The combination of the DOSE button and the ALARM button is used for Dose Alarm Setting. 3) After ten seconds, the AN/UDR-13 will be defaulted to Rate mode after the dose is read.

Set Audible, Visual, Both or none How do I test alarm without radiation source? The AN/UDR-13 has an alarm feature to permit selection of Rate or Dose Alarms and the level at which these alarms are activated. 1) The combination of the RATE button and the ALARM button is used for Rate Alarm Setting. 2) The combination of the DOSE button and the ALARM button is used for Dose Alarm Setting. 3) Set values are the threshold levels of Rate and/or Dose to be set for these alarms to activate. 4) The alarm includes audible and distinct visual features which are visible day and night. There are also switching functions for “visual”, “audio”, “visual and audio”, or none by sequentially pressing the ALARM button. 5) The alarm can be tested by setting the Rate and/or Dose alarms to zero.

Will alarm if preset levels exceeded Will alarm on prompt radiation Setting and un-setting sleep mode 1) To preserve the battery life, the AN/UDR-13 includes a function called SLEEP mode that will extend the battery life from approximately 100 hours to approximately 1000 hours. The AN/UDR-13 passively monitors radiation while in SLEEP mode. 2) When in SLEEP mode the AN/UDR-13 wakes up every 5 minutes to display the current Rate then goes back to SLEEP mode. 3) If either alarm is exceeded, the AN/UDR-13 will go into the normal operating mode and the appropriate alarm will sound. In addition, the AN/UDR-13 will wake up at any time it is exposed to a nuclear burst. 4) The AN/UDR-13 can be set to enter the SLEEP mode or it can be unset to discontinue the SLEEP mode. To enter the SLEEP mode when the unit is on, press the RATE button and hold it. While holding it, press the ON/OFF button until the display shows “SLP” followed by “---”. Release the buttons and the display will show the SLEEP icon at the top of the display. To exit sleep mode, press the ON/OFF button until a “0” and the alarm icons on the left side of the display appear. Release the button and the unit will return to the RATE mode.

10 Backlight LIGHT button Why can’t I see the light?
1) The AN/UDR-13 has a back light feature that allows the operator to see the display in the dark. Press and release the LIGHT button and the display light will stay on for approximately 6 seconds. 2) The light can not be seen in daylight or in a well-lit environment because the UDR-13 is equipped with secure-lighting. Secure-lighting ensures the display will not emit excessive light that can be readily detected in the field by image intensifier devices and that it is compatible with night vision goggles. Cup your hands around the display window or test the UDR-13 in a darkened room to be able to observe the display light.

11 Operator Maintenance Cleaning Inspection Battery replacement
Replace carrying case The Operator Maintenance of the AN/UDR-13 includes cleaning, inspection, battery replacement, carrying case replacement, etc. 1) Use a clean soft cloth to remove dust, moisture, and loose dirt from the outside surfaces of the Radiac Set or Set components. It may be washed with soap and water. 2) Inspect to observe any visual damage to the AN/UDR-13. Inspect the battery cover gasket for deterioration and the battery contacts for corrosion. 3) Replace the batteries when the low battery indication appears on the display window of the AN/UDR-13. 4) When the carrying case is worn out or damaged, replace it with the new one.
