1 Problem Types, Advanced
USD 457 This is a second level module. Please make sure you have seen the “CGI - Problem Types” Power Point Module before viewing this Power Point Module. Preparation Needed: *Ask participants to bring their CGI Folder. They will need to refer to their Problem Types sheet. Materials Needed: *Problems to Be Identified handout (Located on USD 457 PD Module webpage.) *Problems to Be Identified, answer guide handout (Located on USD 457 PD Module webpage.) *Common Core Problem Types sheets, 2 pages (Located on USD 457 PD Module webpage.) *CGI Problem Type Sequence, print the appropriate grade level sheet (Located on USD 457 PD Module webpage.)

2 Writing Story Problems
Write 4 different word problems for the following number sentence 46 / 4. 1. The answer to the first problem is 11. 2. The answer to the second problem is 12. 3. The answer to the third problem is 11 ½. 4. The answer to the fourth problem is 2. (5 minutes) *Assign 1 type of word problem to each participant or small group of teachers. “Can one person from each group share the word problem that the wrote? The rest of you can solve the problem as they read it to see if the problem agrees with the answer provided.”

Depending on how comfortable you are to address the discussion, sometimes the “compare” type problems are confused with Join and Separate Problems. Focus on whether there is action or no action. There might be some that still debate, you can end the debate by saying “There are a variety of problem types. The purpose of this activity is that we are recognizing the different types of word problems.”

5 CGI VS. Common Core The CGI Problem Types chart is very comparable to the Common Core Problem Types chart. The following problem types are more detailed on the Common Core Problem Types Chart: Part-Part-Whole Compare Multiplication and Division Feel free to use either the CGI Problem Types chart or the Common Core Problem Types chart. The purpose of using either chart, is not to teach students the problem type, but to teach students using a variety of types of story problems. This chart should be one of the most used math resources for your math instruction.

Division (Measurement and Partitive) “We will now put into application what we’ve been reviewing. We will divide into 5 groups and write CGI Word Problems. When are session is done, please give me the problems. I will give them to Roz Frey. She will all of these problems to us.” Please divide group into 5 small groups. Ask groups to write at least 5-10 different problem using their assigned category. The 5 different categories are below: Add to (Join) Taken From (Separate) Put Together/Take Apart (Part Part Whole) Compare and Multiplication (2 Different Categories) Division (Measurement and Partitive)

7 CGI Problem Type Sequence
This is a suggested timeline for which problem types to use throughout the year with your students. Michelle Flaming created this document. She trained the math coaches in August She has been to multiple days of CGI training and has trained many teachers and trainers of teachers Cognitively Guided Instruction. Since we started using CGI in January this year, you might not be using the problems types suggested for April. Next year, this will be our guide for CGI Problem Type implementation and it will be on the curriculum map.
