Resurrection Sunday Mat 28:1-20; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-18

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the First Fruits of all believers who too will be resurrected to eternal life 1 Cor 15:20, based on the victory won by our Lord at the Cross, 1 Cor 15:54-57.

This celebration coincides with the Jewish Feast of “First Fruits” commemorating the barely harvest and logistical grace blessings from God. 1 of 7 feasts God gave to Israel, Lev 23:4-14

The Cross of our Lord coincides with the Feast of Passover commemorating the Lord “passing over” their sins until the Savior would come as depicted in the eating of the sacrificial lamb.

His burial coincides with the Feast of Unleavened Bread commemorating the removal of sin. Christ removed the sin barrier between God and man. His burial (rest) signifies the work has been completed.

Mat 12:40, “For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

1 Cor 5:7-8, “Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

We celebrate the completed work of our Lord Jesus Christ upon the Cross and His subsequent resurrection.

Our Lord signified the importance of His work on the Cross by giving us seven phrases while being crucified. They include:

1. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do!”, Luke 23:34. This sums up the reason for the Cross, the forgiveness of our sins. Cf. Jer 31:34; Rom 5:8

2. “Today you will be with me in Paradise!”, Luke 23:43. This is the promise to all that believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They will receive eternal salvation.

3. “‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’”, John 19:25-26. Jesus kept every detail of the Law, He was without spot or blemish.

4. “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Mark 15:34. Jesus received the judgment and penalty for our sins which was separation from the Father in His humanity.

5. “I am thirsty!”, John 19:28. This fulfilled prophecy, Psa 69:21, indicating the humanity of the Jesus Christ as the Son of Man, Son of David.

6. “It is finished!”, John 19:30 The work for salvation was completed once and for all time.

God has done all the work.

God has done all the work. a. The Son of God received the penalty for our sins.

God has done all the work. a. The Son of God received the penalty for our sins. b. God the Father judged our sins in the body of Jesus Christ.

God has done all the work. c. God the Holy Spirit sustained the humanity of Jesus Christ, Heb 9:14.

The only “work” for salvation that God wants from you is to believe in His Son Jesus Christ, John 6:28-29, which is a non-meritorious act of faith.

John 6:28-29, “Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.””

7. “Father into your hands I commit My spirit!”, Luke 23:46; (Mat 27:50; Mark 15:37). He was entrusting His eternal spirit to the Father just as we should.

The Lord Jesus Christ died voluntarily, John 10:17-18, having completed the work of salvation.

The blood of Christ that saves is analogous to His spiritual death on the Cross not His physical blood.

Our Lord’s saving work on the cross: a. Propitiated God the Father. b. Redeemed us from the slave market of sin. c. Reconciled us to God.

John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Communion

Ex 6:6-7, “Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians’.”
