18 BCM Overview Annual Sponsored Research n NIH: ~$300M Awards on 1,000 submissions n Total: ~$400M Awards on 2,200 submissions n ranked 17 th in US (126 medical schools)

19 Applications n Applications are submitted from, and awarded to, an institution (e.g., Baylor College of Medicine) n Fellow and mentor are identified in the application n Fellow and mentor are identified in BRAIN, with fellow indicated as principal investigator (PI) in BRAIN

20 Applications n Don’t be disqualified - read and follow the sponsor’s rules regarding format, deadlines, eligibility, and how to apply n Plan – Notify Mentor and find out how much time needed for review – Notify Department and find out how much time to review

21 Applications n Verify what is needed: –IRB and IACUC protocols –Conflict of Interest Forms –Indirects –Committed Effort n Completed application must be uploaded in BRAIN, approved by mentor, sections, departments and in Sponsored Programs FIVE working days before sponsor deadline

23 Applications n Professional societies and organizations may offer small travelling fellowships to attend national meetings n Any honor, with or without funding, helps build your curriculum vitae n Some fellowships and many grants are portable, transferring to your new institution if you move
