TWO TYPES OF GRE 3 ¾ hours to complete GRE General Test (Revised) GRE Subject Test

STRUCTURE OF GRE Analytical Writing Verbal Reasoning Quantitative Reasoning

TYPICAL COMPUTER-BASED GRE® GENERAL TEST Section # of Questions Time Analytical Writing1 Issue Task30 minutes Analytical Writing1 Argument Task30 minutes Verbal (2 Sections)2030 minutes Quantitative (2 Sections) 3035 minutes Unscored**Varies ** An unidentified unscored section may be included and may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section. It is not counted as part of your score. *** An identified research section that is not scored may be included, and it is always at the end of the test.

ANALYTICAL WRITING SECTION The first part of the exam Two tasks -“Analyze an Issue” Task – one question; discuss whether you agree or disagree with a claim about a topic of general interest - “Analyze an Argument” Task – one question; evaluate the logical soundness of a particular argument

VERBAL SECTION Consists of sentence completions, sentence equivalence, and reading comprehension passages. Multiple choice: 1) one answer, or 2) multiple answers Select-in-passage Tests your understanding of vocabulary in context and ability to think critically

QUANTITATIVE SECTION Multiple choice. Consists of quantitative comparison, problem solving, and data interpretation questions that test high-school level maths. Understand basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and data analysis. Reason and solve problems quantitatively.

EXPERIMENTAL SECTION Unscored portion of the GRE May be verbal or quantitative Tester does not know which section is experimental or not so must take all test portions as if it were all scored!

TEST-TAKING SKILLS Be familiar with the test directions as you waste precious time. GRE is a timed test! CAT – Computer Adaptive Testing: the test will adapt the difficulty of the second section (of both verbal and quantitative) depending on how well you do on the first. There will be NO adaptation within each section!

SCORING Three scores are reported on the General Test: -a Verbal Reasoning score reported on a 130-170 score scale, in 1-point increment -a Quantitative Reasoning score reported on a 130- 170 score scale, in 1-point increment, and - an Analytical Writing score reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments If you answer no questions at all in a section (Verbal, Quantitative or Analytical Writing), you receive a No Score (NS) for that section.
