Saving Lives by Providing Basic Healthcare Services to Women and Children in Rural India Hospital Operations Highlights  Staffed with four full-time medical staff, which include a gynaecologist, a paediatrician, and two nurses.  Additional support is provided by a full-time manager and a team of dedicated local volunteers.  Since its opening in October, the hospital has provided basic outpatient healthcare services to about 500 clients (women and children) per month.  In addition to medical care, the hospital provides free medicine to all its clients.  The hospital has organized four ‘Health Camps’ for the service of all villagers. Maya Devi Charitable Hospital Inspiration of One; Leadership of Many; Dream of the Community Maya Devi Charitable Hospital Inspiration of One; Leadership of Many; Dream of the Community Hospital Background Maya Devi Charitable Hospital is a dream come true for the rural community of Sarurpur Kalan. Located 50 km North of the capital city of New Delhi, India, the hospital serves a population of about 50,000. It provides basic healthcare services to women and children who have no other access to healthcare. The hospital was built in memory of a woman who lived in the village for more than 50 years and bequeathed her estate for the purpose of building this hospital. Prior to construction of the hospital, the healthcare situation for women and children in the village was dire. Out of an estimated 1,200 childbirths every year, about 130 children died before celebrating their 5 th birthday and about 15 women perished in childbirth. This is about 4,000% higher than the average in developed countries. The main goal of the hospital is to reduce the child mortality rate by 80% within the next five years. This will be accomplished through health education, scientific medical diagnosis, and ethical treatment of diseases.
