3. House Construction Many factors go into building a house. One of those important factors is planning. A tool used for planning is called a Bill of Materials or BOM. 4. Materials The BOM can be a very lengthy and involved document. Just think of all the materials that go into building a house - from the main framing members to the small nails used for trim work. 5. BOM For our purposes, we will keep our introduction to BOMs simple. 6. Producing BOM The easiest way to create a BOM is on the computer. You can use a software program that creates spreadsheets or tables since the information is usually easiest to read in a chart format. There are many software programs made specifically for creating BOMs, but they are usually for much bigger projects than what we’ll be doing. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013.
