2 Activity Sheet 1 Grade: 5 th grade Interdisciplinary Unit: Greece Team: Madelyne Psencik & Shari Ruiz Guiding Question: Who are the Greek Gods and what are they gods of? Objective: The student will be able to: 1. Identify the Greek Gods and 2. Explain the stories of the Greek Gods and 3. Create their own Greek god and a story about them Procedures: Materials/Resources: Evaluation: Copies of Greek Myths by Marcia Williams “Identify that Greek God” worksheet The students will be evaluated on how well they do on the “Identify that Greek God” worksheet. 1. The teacher discusses the Greek gods and the impact they have had on the life around us 2. Students and teacher read from Greek Myths 3. Students look at pictures of Greek gods to put a visual with the written text 4. Students will complete an “Identify that Greek God” worksheet 5. Students will then create their own Greek god and write a story about the Greek god they had created 6. The students will read their stories to the entire class

3 Activity Sheet 2 Grade: 5 th grade Interdisciplinary Unit: Greece Team: Madelyne Psencik & Shari Ruiz Guiding Question: What does a Greek city look like? Objectives: The student will be able to: 1. Design a blue print for a Greek city and 2. Describe what a Greek city looks like Procedures: Materials/Resources: Evaluation: Pictures that represent the different types of architecture Pictures of Greek cities Blueprint paper Scissors Rulers Pencils Erasers The students’ evaluation will be on the creation of the blueprint. The students must have at least 4 buildings in their city. 1. The teacher will present the students with pictures of the architecture of Ancient Greece and what the cities looked like. 2. The teacher and students will discuss how the architecture from Ancient Greece differs from what we see in the modern world today. 3. The teacher will distribute the materials needed to create a blueprint. 4. The students will create a blueprint of an imaginary city. They may work in groups or individually. 5. The students will then present and describe their city to the class.

4 Activity Sheet 3 Grade: 5 th grade Interdisciplinary Unit: Greece Team: Madelyne Psencik & Shari Ruiz Guided Question: How would you portray the Greek gods? Objectives: The student will be able to: 1. Create a script about the Greeks and 2. Act out the script as part of a readers theatre Procedure:Materials/Resources: Evaluation: Copies of the Odyssey; 1 per person Examples of scripts 1. The teacher assigns each student a part to read. 2. The teacher and students will read The Odyssey together. 3. After reading The Odyssey, the teacher will divide the students into groups to create their own script that depicts their view of what Greek life would be like. 4. The students will act out their scripts in front of the class. The students will be evaluated on their scripts and their participation.

5 Activity sheet 4 Objective: The Students will be able to: 1. List the planets and who they are named after 2. Pick a god not already a planet and draw what this new planet would look like Interdisciplinary Unit: Greece Team: Madelyne Psencik and Shari Ruiz Grade: 5 th Guiding Question: How are planets named? Procedures : 1. Teacher discusses the importance of costume in the theatre and shows pictures of Greek clothing. 2. Teacher demonstrates and models how to use a sewing machine along with how to take measurements. 3. Teacher explains the importance of knowing the character in creating a costume and how to incorporate a character’s personality and traits into the costume. 4. Students will chose a Greek god and research about that god. 5. Students will collect and sort through items that they could use in their costumes. 6. Students will create a costume that represents their Greek god. 7. Students will have a fashion show in which they explain why the made their costume the way they did and how that reflects a trait of their god. Materials/Resources: Pictures of Greek clothing Fabric Scissors Needle and thread/sewing machine Beads/sequences/glitter Ribbons Other items that could represent various Olympian gods Evaluation: Students must have at least one item that represents a trait of their god.

6 Activity Sheet 5 Objective: The Students will be able to: 1. List at least 3 Olympic events 2. Participate in Olympic Event 3. Demonstrate good sportsmanship Interdisciplinary Unit: Greece Team: Madelyne Psencik and Shari Ruiz Grade : 5 th Guiding Question: What are some Olympic games? Procedures: 1. The teacher explains the origins of the Olympic games and their connection to the Greek gods. 2. Students will run in a relay 3. Students swim in a relay race 4. Students will compete in an archery event. 5. Students will list at least 3 other Olympic events. 6. Students will demonstrate appropriate sportsmanship at the medal ceremony Materials/Resources: Cones Swimming pool Bow and arrow Medals gold, silver, bronze and participation Evaluation: Evaluation will be assessed on participation Students must finish each Olympic game and list at least three events.

7 Activity Sheet 6 Objective: The Students will be able to: 1. Identify a Greek god 2. Understand the traits and characteristics of that god; 3. Create a costume that portrays the traits and characteristics of the god you chose. Interdisciplinary Unit: Greece Team: Madelyne Psencik and Shari Ruiz Grade : 5 th Guiding Question: What do the Greek god’s look like? Procedures: 1. Teacher discusses the naming of planets and the influence the Greek and Roman gods had on the choosing of names. 2. Students and teacher read The Planet God 3. Students look at pictures of planets and traits of gods they were named after. 4.Students will match the names of all the planets to the gods they were named after by completing the name that god worksheet. 5. Students create a new planet based on a god that is not a planet. Materials/Resources: The Planet Gods by Jacqueline Milton “Name that god” worksheet Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the name that planet worksheet. Students must have at least 80% accuracy.
