DVC is passionately committed to student learning through the intellectual, scientific, artistic, psychological, and ethical development of its diverse student body. Diablo Valley College prepares students for transfer to four-year universities; provides career and technical education; supports the economic development of the region; offers pre-collegiate programs; and promotes personal growth and lifelong learning.

Passionately Committed to Student Learning Student Learning is assessed in both instructional and student services areas. DVC has 1316 active courses in instruction with over 6000 individual student learning outcomes. Approximately one-third of these courses are assessed each academic year. The outcomes and resulting departmental dialogue lead to course improvements and improved student learning. DVC has 177 active instructional programs and certificates. Approximately 50% of these programs and certificates are assessed per academic year and the resulting departmental dialogue leads to changes and improvements in programs. DVC Student Services also conducts point-of-service surveys to determine student learning and understanding related to college processes and services.

Prepares student for transfer to 4-year universities DVC offers a broad general education curriculum that meets the requirements for Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) for both CSU and UC. DVC has 1229 courses that are articulated for transfer to either UC or CSU. DVC has created Associate Transfer degrees to facilitate transfer to the CSU system. The college currently has six of these degrees with additional 13 transfer degrees under development. DVC is usually in the top five community colleges in number of students that transfer to CSU and UC. The ARCC report from the State Chancellor’s Office demonstrates that DVC is near the top of our college peer group in the state with regard to student progress toward degrees, certificates, and transfer.

Provides career and technical education DVC has 32 total Career Technical Education (CTE) programs offering 39 degrees and 97 certificates. Each year, the college evaluates CTE program outcomes through performance measures provided in the Perkins Report provided by the State Chancellor’s Office. These outcomes provide the basis for development of program improvement strategies to be supported by Perkins funding. For 2012-2013, the college performance indicators are as follows: CTE course completion: 93.42% Completion of degree, certificate or prepared for transfer: 77.83% Persistence and transfer: 86.03% Employment: 74.33% The ARCC report from the State Chancellor’s Office demonstrates that DVC is near the top of our college peer group in the state with regard to successful course completion rates for credit vocational courses.

Supports the Economic Development in the region The college manages over $2.2M in grants and allocations in support of our Career Technical Education and economic development missions. Current areas of focus are healthcare, advanced manufacturing, energy, and information and communications technology. DVC was awarded over $2M for Career Pathways development with an emphasis on middle and high school projects that transition students into career technical education programs of study. DVC is the lead institution for this partnership whose activities serve more than 17,000 students through 33 career exploration activities in 2011-2012. DVC, as part of a $14 M district grant, is collaborating with Solano and Laney Colleges in the development of a program in Industrial Maintenance Machinist/Mechanic (IMMM). DVC developed affiliations with six healthcare partners to support the practical training of Medical Laboratory Technology students. Funding to support the program is currently being sought from industry partners.

Offers Pre-collegiate programs DVC offers pre-collegiate programs in math, writing, reading, and ESL. In addition, the college has developed a Pre-Apprenticeship program, and community ESL partnerships (with Catholic Charities and Mt. Diablo Adult Education) to integrate pre-collegiate skills development into CTE careers. DVC is developing innovations within its basic skills areas to help students be more successful including self-paced math classes and integrated reading-writing programs. Pre-collegiate students receive additional support through cohort networking, mentoring, tutoring, study skills development, and supplemental instruction The ARCC report from the Chancellor’s Office demonstrates our work in this area.
