2 Life n He was born in West Pembroke, Maine n Was born on February 27,1899 n Died on March 31, 1978 n He full name was Charles Herbert Best.

3 Education n Went to school in U.S, Canada and Europe. n Graduated from the University of Toronto. n Was a medical student in 1921.

4 Achievements n 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. n Was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1994. n Became Adviser of United Nations World Health Organizations.

5 Insulin n Was discovered in 1921 n Produced in insets of Langerhorns (which is located in the pancreas) n Also called glucose.

6 Insulin n The definition is “A hormone that regulates the body’s use of sugar and food”. n Affects the body’s use of protein, fat and mineral products.

7 The First Insulin Tests(Dog) n The first insulin test was on a diabetic dog. n The insulin was extracted out of its pancreas. n The test was successful

8 Diabetes n Causes an imbalance of insulin n Outcomes of diabetes: weight loss, high blood pressure, and blindness.

9 First Insulin Test (on a human) n First human was a 14 year old boy who weighed 75 pounds and was a 2 year diabetic and was on the verge of death. n The test was successful

10 Ways Insulin is Made in the Body n Food being absorbed into the bloodstream. n Artificial insulin being inserted into the bloodstream.

11 Ways Insulin is Put into the Body n Never taken by mouth because stomach acid deteriorates insulin. n Insulin shots, insulin pens, jet injectors, and insulin pumps.

12 Different Types of Diabetics n People with type II diabetes produce insulin, but do not always produce enough. n People with type I diabetes do not produce insulin at all.

13 Ways Insulin Deteriorates n When it is swallowed because of stomach acid. n In extreme cold temperatures (under 15 degrees Fahrenheit.) n In extreme hot temperatures (over 85 degrees Fahrenheit)

14 Places to Insert Insulin n Abdomen, outer upper arms, thighs or hips. n Common because there is lots of blood and muscle, and glucose is in blood and muscle

15 Somogyi Effect n A disorder caused by too much insulin in the body n Caused by your liver releasing stored insulin all at one time and your blood sugar goes too high.
