The Women, vv. 1-3 Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means Luke 8:1-3 Proclaiming and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom κηρυσσω (kerusso) and εὐαγγελιζω (euangelizo) – preaching and evangelizing about the Kingdom The Twelve, and some women Where would we be without the role of women in the Church? Contributing to their support – 2 Corinthians 9:6-15

The Soils, vv. 4-8 When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable: "The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the air ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great." As He said these things, He would call out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear.“ Parable (παραβολη) – To lay along side, a comparison from contemporary life in order to teach a principle. Sowing seeds Listen up! Revelation 2 and 3

The Secret, vv. 9-10 His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant. And He said, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.” Luke 8:9-10 “Mysteries of the kingdom” Mystery/secret – μυστηριον (mysterion) – a previously unrevealed truth, Col 1:26-27; Rom 16:25-26 Matthew 13 parables Do they describe the Church? Amillenialism, Progressive Dispensationalism Do they describe the “mystery form of the Kingdom?” J Dwight Pentecost, Arnold Fruchtenbaum Do they describe the time leading up to the Kingdom? 9 The Solution, vv "Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. Luke 8:11-12 Jesus interprets for us – He is the author 2 Peter 1:19-21 Parable of the Soils 4 different reactions to the Word moving forward until the Kingdom comes The hard hearted, v. 12 No chance for germination – life They will not BELIEVE and be SAVED They are like the nation of Israel: Romans 10:14-17 .

The Solution, vv Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity Luke 8:13-14 Rocky soil – they need moisture, 1 Corinthians 3:6 Receive the word with joy – δεχομαι (dechomai); Luke 9:48; 18:17; Acts 17:11; 1 Thess 2:13 They BELIEVE An emotional response Thorny soil An intellectual response Life is implied, 2 Timothy 2:3-4 Babes in Christ, 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

The Solution, vv But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance Luke 8:15 Hear the word in an honest and good heart A balanced approach to the word, with joy and thankfulness Romans 12:1-2 – transform your mind 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 Hold it fast, and bear fruit = sanctification, present tense salvation Matthew 13:23 – some one hundred fold, some sixty, and some thirty Bear fruit – we don’t produce fruit, John 15 Where do you fall? 2 Corinthians 6:1-2; 1 John 1:9

The Women, the Soils, and the Secret, Luke 8:1-15
