5 5 What is Bookshare™?  Bookshare is an online library of accessible media for readers with print disabilities.  Over 60,000 Members  Over 7,700 schools and other organizations  Over 60,000 titles  Over a thousand new books added every month Bookshare believes that people with print disabilities should have the same ease of access to books and periodicals that people without disabilities enjoy. Funded by an award from OSEP, the Office of Special Education Programs in the U.S. Department of Education. as of 10/15/09

12 12 NIMAC - NIMAS Simplified  National Instructional Materials Access Center  National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard  Source for K-12 textbooks purchased after July 19, 2006 when specified by contract  Over 15,000 textbooks and supplementary reading

13 Bookshare as an Iowa NIMAC Authorized User 1.Log in to your Bookshare account and search for your textbook using Bookshare’s “one-step search,” by typing in the ISBN in our simple search field. 2.If textbook is available in the NIMAC, teacher can immediately request Bookshare to retrieve book from NIMAC and convert it. We will make the textbook student-ready and notify the teacher through email. 3.Teacher can then download the textbook for the qualified student and read using free reader software. 4.Average turnaround for NIMAC-sourced textbooks is 1 week or less. 5.If book is not available, please contact: Iowa Department for the Blind at 1-800-362-2587 or www.idbonline.org. 14 Textbooks Not in the NIMAC  Contact your book purchasing department and see if request was made to publisher.  Check with your State Coordinator to see what contracts are in place with publishers.  Be sure to stipulate NIMAS files in publisher contracts.  Go to http://nimas.cast.org/ to find contract language.http://nimas.cast.org/  Send physical copy to Bookshare.

22 Seven Point Digital Rights Management  Qualified Users  Only qualified users with certification of disability on record.  Contractual Agreement  All users have to agree to terms of use that forbid violation of specific copyright laws.  Copyright Notice  All books in our library contain a copyright notice.  Encryption  All books are encrypted for a specific user.  Fingerprint  All downloaded copyrighted material is fingerprinted as to allow us to trace files that show up elsewhere back to the Member.  Security Database  All transactions, encryption codes and fingerprints are stored in a database enabling Bookshare to track any unusual activity.  Security Watch Program  Monitors all book downloads and suspends any user whose account exhibits unusual activity.
